How it works, in short

TaleemSquare elementary reading tutoring supports children from Kindergarten to Grade 5 in live, one-to-one lessons. Younger children work on phonics, sight words and decoding. Older elementary children build fluency, vocabulary and comprehension as they move from learning to read to reading to learn.

Lessons use books at your child's level and plenty of encouragement. Plans start at $85 a month after a free assessment.

Signs your child could use help

  • Struggling to sound out new words
  • Reads slowly, word by word
  • Can read the words but can't retell the story
  • Avoids reading at home
  • Teacher says reading level is below expected
  • Starting to say they hate reading

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

How we teach young readers

Phonics first for decoding

Children who are still decoding get systematic phonics, not guessing strategies.

Lots of reading aloud

Every lesson includes your child reading aloud with gentle, immediate correction.

Talk about books

Discussing stories builds comprehension and vocabulary at the same time.

Celebrate progress

Children see their own improvement, which motivates them to keep reading.

Common worries, honest answers

“My child is in Grade 3 and still struggles to decode.”

That is worth addressing now. Older children can learn phonics too, with age-appropriate materials that don't feel babyish.

“Will tutoring put my child off reading?”

We aim for the opposite. Lessons are encouraging and use books your child enjoys, so reading starts to feel possible.

“Should I read to my child or have them read to me?”

Both help. We share simple suggestions after lessons on what to do at home.

Frequently asked questions

How can I help my elementary child with reading?

Read aloud to your child every day, even after they can read, and let them read to you from books at the right level. Talk about stories together. If your child is still guessing words or avoiding reading, a reading assessment can show what is going on.

What reading level should my child be at?

Expected levels vary by school and leveling system. As a broad guide, most children decode simple books by the end of Grade 1, read early chapter books in Grades 2-3, and read longer novels and nonfiction by Grades 4-5. Your child's teacher can tell you their level.

When should I worry about my child's reading?

Consider extra help if your child is noticeably behind classmates, still guesses words in Grade 2 or later, reads very slowly, or avoids reading. Early help is more effective than waiting.

How much does elementary reading tutoring cost?

TaleemSquare plans start at $85 a month for two one-to-one lessons a week of 45 minutes, about $10.63 a lesson. Three lessons a week cost $119 and four cost $149, with no contract, no registration fee and a free first assessment.

Do you use leveled books?

Tutors use books matched to your child's reading level, including decodable books for early readers and leveled readers or chapter books for older children.

Can my child have both reading and math tutoring?

Yes. Many families split lessons between reading and math. Discuss your goals at the free assessment.
