How it works, in short
TaleemSquare HSC maths tutoring is live, one-to-one online lessons of 45 minutes for NSW students in Mathematics Standard 1 or 2, Advanced, Extension 1 or Extension 2. Tutors follow the NESA syllabus for your child's course, their school's assessment schedule and the style of HSC exam questions, working on video with a shared whiteboard.
NSW schools now teach the new 2024 Mathematics syllabuses, and the first HSC exams on them are in 2027. After every lesson you get a short WhatsApp update. Plans are A$130 a month for two lessons a week, with no contract, and start with a free assessment.

What changes after a term of lessons

Secure in the current topic
Can explain and apply what the class is on now, whether that is annuities in Standard 2, integration in Advanced or vectors in Extension 1.
Ready for assessment tasks
Goes into in-class tests and assessment tasks knowing the format, the likely question types and how working is marked.
Calm on a long paper
Plans time across a two or three hour exam, sets out multi-step answers clearly and checks the four and five mark questions.
What we cover
Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.
Standard 1 and 2
Investments and loans, trigonometry, rates and ratios, bivariate data and probability, plus annuities, network flow, critical path analysis and the normal distribution in Standard 2.
Functions and graphs
Working with functions and graph transformations in Year 11 Advanced, then further transformations and modelling with functions in Year 12.
Trig, exponential and log functions
Radian measure, trig identities and equations, and exponential and logarithmic functions, all of which return in the Year 12 calculus.
Calculus
An introduction to differentiation in Year 11, then the product, quotient and chain rules, integration and applications of calculus in Year 12.
Statistics, sequences and finance
Probability and data in Year 11, then discrete and continuous random variables, the normal distribution, sequences and series, and financial maths in Year 12 Advanced.
Extension 1
Polynomials, combinatorics and the binomial theorem in Year 11, then proof by induction, vectors, inverse trig functions, further calculus and the binomial distribution in Year 12.
Extension 2
A Year 12 only course: the nature of proof, further vectors, complex numbers, further integration and calculus applied to mechanics.
HSC paper technique
Advanced and Extension 2 are three-hour, 100-mark papers and Extension 1 is two hours for 70 marks, each with 10 minutes reading time.
Signs your child could use help
- Unsure whether Standard 2 or Advanced is the right course
- Marks dropped after moving from Year 10 into Year 11 Advanced
- Coping in Advanced but finding Extension 1 a big step up
- Loses marks for setting out rather than wrong answers
- Runs out of time before the last questions in assessment tasks
- Stressed about the HSC exams and what they mean for the ATAR
One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.
Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live
Precalculus, AP Calculus and AP Statistics
There is no single US match. Mathematics Advanced covers ground similar to precalculus and much of AP Calculus AB, with probability distributions. Extension 1 adds induction, vectors and the binomial distribution, and Extension 2 reaches complex numbers and calculus-based mechanics, closer to first-year university work.
Level: Grades 11-12, precalculus to calculus
A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics
Advanced and Extension 1 together cover much of the pure content of A-level Mathematics, such as calculus, trigonometry, exponentials and sequences. Extension 2 topics such as complex numbers and proof by induction sit in A-level Further Mathematics.
Level: Years 12-13, A-level Maths and Further Maths
Grade 12 university-preparation courses
Advanced and Extension 1 overlap with Ontario's Grade 12 Advanced Functions and Calculus and Vectors (MHF4U and MCV4U), and with similar Grade 12 pre-calculus and calculus courses in other provinces. Standard 2 is closer to applied senior courses built on statistics and financial maths.
Level: Grades 11-12 university-preparation maths
NSW Mathematics Standard, Advanced, Extension 1 and 2 (NESA)
New 2024 syllabuses started with Year 11 in 2026; the first HSC exams on them are in 2027. Extension 2 is Year 12 only. In most courses the HSC mark averages a moderated school assessment mark with the exam mark. Standard 1's HSC exam is optional.

How we teach HSC maths
Matched to the exact course
Tutors confirm whether your child is in Standard, Advanced or an Extension course and teach that syllabus in the order their school uses.
Planned around the assessment schedule
Lessons are mapped to the dates on your child's assessment schedule, so revision peaks before each task instead of after it.
Working set out for the marker
Students write each step clearly, because HSC marking guidelines award marks for correct method in longer questions, not just the final answer.
Honest help with take-home tasks
Tutors explain the maths behind an investigation or take-home task but never write or edit it, in line with NESA rules on students' own work.

Common worries, honest answers
“My child is struggling in Advanced. Should they drop to Standard 2?”
That decision belongs to your child and their school, and schools set their own deadlines for changing courses. At the free assessment we look at where the gaps are and give you an honest view of whether tutoring is likely to close them in time.
“Will an online tutor really know the NSW syllabus?”
Tutors work from the NESA syllabus for your child's course and from school material you share, such as the assessment schedule, past tasks and the class textbook, so lessons match what is taught at school.
“Year 12 is already packed. Where does tutoring fit?”
Lessons are 45 minutes, two to four times a week, booked after school or on weekends. The aim is to make existing study time more focused, not to pile extra hours onto a busy final year.
