Why we teach only two subjects

Most online tutoring companies list every subject a parent might search for. It looks reassuring and it is usually a marketplace in disguise — a directory of freelancers, where the quality of any given lesson depends entirely on which name you happened to click.

We took the opposite approach. Math, and reading and English, are the subjects parents most often come to us about. They are the subjects where gaps compound fastest and most invisibly, and where one-to-one teaching makes the clearest difference. Keeping the list short means our tutors specialise, our assessments are built to find gaps in those two subjects, and we can be honest about what we cannot help with.

If your child needs help with science, a language or any other subject, we are not the right service. We would rather tell you that than take the booking.

What we actually believe about tutoring

A few things shape how we run lessons, and they are worth stating because they explain choices that might otherwise look odd.

Most math problems are older than they look

A student failing Grade 9 algebra usually does not have an algebra problem. They have a fractions problem, or a negative-numbers problem, that has been quietly compounding since Grade 6. Re-teaching the current topic more slowly does not fix that, which is why our free assessment deliberately tests several grade levels below where a child currently is.

Confidence moves before grades do

Parents often expect the first sign of progress to be a test score. In practice it is almost always behavioural — starting homework without being asked, attempting a question instead of waiting to be told, saying "I think" instead of "I don't know". Grades follow, usually across a term rather than a fortnight. Anyone who promises you a grade jump by a specific date is guessing.

Short and frequent beats long and occasional

Our lessons are 45 minutes rather than an hour, and students who need more support get more sessions rather than longer ones. Attention and retention both fall off well before the 60-minute mark, particularly for younger children.

The parent should never have to ask how it is going

A short message after every class, a written report every month, and open access to sit in on any lesson. This is the single most common thing parents tell us other providers got wrong.

What we deliberately don't do

• We don't sell long contracts. Several larger providers discount heavily in exchange for 6 to 18 month commitments. Our published price is our lowest price, monthly.
• We don't run group classes and call them personalised. Every session is genuinely one tutor to one student.
• We don't promise specific grade outcomes. Too many variables sit outside a tutor's control — school, sleep, motivation, what else is going on at home.
• We don't take a booking we can't serve. If the assessment suggests your child does not need paid tutoring right now, we will say so.

Where we are, and where our tutors are

TaleemSquare LLC is registered in Wyoming, USA. Our team and tutors work remotely across several countries, and every tutor teaches in fluent English after passing a spoken-English and live teaching assessment. Being straightforward about this matters: it is the reason we can charge $85 a month when centre-based providers charge $250 to $550, and a parent deserves to know why a price is low before they wonder about it.
