How it works, in short
TaleemSquare SSAT tutoring is live, one-to-one preparation for the Secondary School Admission Test used by many independent day and boarding schools. In 45-minute online lessons, one tutor covers the math, verbal and reading sections and the writing sample, which is part of the test but not scored.
The SSAT level follows your child's current grade: Elementary for grades 3-4, Middle for 5-7 and Upper for 8-11. At Middle and Upper Level a wrong answer costs a quarter point, so students learn when to skip. Plans start at $85 a month after a free assessment.

What changes after a term of lessons

Answers or skips on purpose
Uses the quarter-point rule at Middle and Upper Level: answers after ruling out choices, and skips true guesses.
Confident with SSAT math
Solves arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data questions accurately at test pace, without careless slips.
Reads and reasons with a method
Approaches reading passages and verbal questions with a repeatable method, backed by a growing vocabulary.
What we cover
Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.
Quantitative sections
Number sense, fractions, percents, ratios, algebra, geometry and data, practised in the multiple-choice style of your child's SSAT level.
Verbal section
Vocabulary and word relationships built from roots, prefixes and reading, so unfamiliar words can still be worked out on test day.
Reading comprehension
Main idea, inference, tone and detail questions on fiction and nonfiction passages, with a pacing plan for the whole section.
The writing sample
Planning and writing an organized response to a prompt within the time allowed. It is not scored, but it is part of the test and deserves a plan.
Guessing strategy
At Middle and Upper Level a wrong answer loses a quarter point and a skipped question loses nothing, so students practise deciding fast.
Timed practice
Practice sections under test conditions, scored with your level's rules, then a review of each miss so the plan follows real results.
Signs your child could use help
- Applying to boarding or day schools for next year
- Guesses wildly or leaves too many questions blank
- Vocabulary feels like the weakest area
- Math is fine at school but slow under time pressure
- Unsure whether to take the SSAT or the ISEE
- Testing at home or at a test center soon
One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

How we prepare students for the SSAT
Start with the weakest section
The free assessment shows whether math, verbal or reading is costing the most, so lessons begin where points are being lost.
Scored with the real rules
At Middle and Upper Level, practice is marked with the quarter-point rule, so your child sees exactly how skipping changes the score.
Vocabulary every lesson
A few minutes of word work in every lesson adds up over weeks, which helps far more than cramming lists the night before.
Updates you can act on
A short note after each lesson says what was covered, and timed sections every few weeks show progress honestly.

Common worries, honest answers
“Should my child take the SSAT or the ISEE?”
Start with what each target school accepts on its admission page. The tests differ: the SSAT level follows the current grade and takes off a quarter point for wrong answers at Middle and Upper Level, while the ISEE level follows the grade being applied to and has no penalty.
“Can you promise the percentile our school expects?”
No. Schools look at the whole application, and no tutor can promise a score. We give a clear plan, practice scored with the real rules and honest feedback on what is improving.
“My child panics and guesses on everything.”
That is common and fixable. Practice with the quarter-point rule shows that blind guesses can cost points, while a guess after ruling out choices usually helps, so your child learns a calm, repeatable approach.
