Online Algebra Tutoring for Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2

Our algebra tutoring is one-to-one, 45 minutes a session, and covers pre-algebra through Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 — expressions, linear and quadratic equations, systems, factoring, exponents, functions, logarithms and rational expressions.

Algebra is where math stops being about numbers and starts being about relationships between them. Students rarely fail algebra because algebra is hard; they fail it because a gap in fractions, negatives or the order of operations turns every algebra step into a coin flip. We look for that first.

What we cover

Topics in algebra tutoring

Lessons follow your child's own school curriculum — Common Core, US state standards, Canadian provincial curricula, the UK National Curriculum, the Australian Curriculum, IB or a homeschool programme.

Pre-algebra foundations

Integers, order of operations, fractions in algebraic contexts, and the number properties everything else rests on.

Expressions & simplifying

Collecting like terms, distributing, and reading an expression's structure instead of attacking it symbol by symbol.

Linear equations & inequalities

One-step through multi-step, variables on both sides, and inequalities including compound cases.

Systems of equations

Substitution, elimination and graphical solutions, plus recognising which method a question is inviting.

Exponents & polynomials

Exponent laws, scientific notation, multiplying and dividing polynomials.

Factoring & quadratics

Common factors, trinomials, difference of squares, completing the square, the quadratic formula and the discriminant.

Functions & graphs

Notation, domain and range, transformations, and moving between equation, table and graph.

Rational, radical & logarithmic

Algebra 2 territory: rational expressions, radical equations, exponentials and logarithms.

Is this your child?

Signs a student at this level needs support

None of these on their own mean your child is behind. Two or three together usually mean there is a specific gap worth finding — which is exactly what the free assessment is for.

  • Solves equations correctly sometimes and cannot say why the other times went wrong
  • Sign errors with negatives appearing again and again
  • Can factor when told to factor, but can't spot when factoring is the right move
  • Copes with worked examples, stalls on word problems
  • Grade dropped specifically when algebra started
  • Says algebra is 'pointless' — usually a confidence signal rather than an opinion

Our approach

How we teach algebra

Almost every persistent algebra problem is a diagnosis problem. Teaching the topic again, more slowly, rarely fixes it.

1

Find the arithmetic underneath

Before re-teaching quadratics, the tutor checks negatives, fractions and order of operations. That is where most of the lost marks are actually generated.

2

Structure before procedure

Students learn to read what an expression is made of, so they choose a method instead of trying to recall which one goes with which question shape.

3

One method, secured

Textbooks teach four ways to solve a quadratic. We secure one that fits the student, then add alternatives once the first is reliable.

4

Error-pattern tracking

Tutors keep a note of the specific mistakes a student repeats — sign errors, dropped terms, distributing wrong — and target those directly rather than assigning more general practice.

Inside the classroom

What an algebra lesson looks like

A typical 45-minute session. Tutors adapt the timings to the child in front of them.

  1. 1

    Warm-up (5 min)

Targeted arithmetic — usually negatives or fractions — chosen from the student's own recent error patterns.

  2. 2

    Recap (5 min)

Questions from prior topics, spaced out, to confirm what has actually held.

  3. 3

    Teaching (15 min)

The new method built up on the whiteboard, with the student explaining each step back.

  4. 4

    Practice ladder (13 min)

Questions that step from routine to unfamiliar, with prompting withdrawn as accuracy holds.

  5. 5

    Independent question (5 min)

One question with no help at all, which is the honest test of whether the lesson worked.

  6. 6

    Summary (2 min)

WhatsApp note to you: topic covered, what improved, what is still shaky.

Parent questions

What parents ask us about this age group

“My child was fine at math until algebra.”

That is the single most common thing parents tell us, and it usually means arithmetic was being handled by memory rather than understanding. Algebra removes the ability to memorise your way through, so the earlier gap becomes visible. It is fixable, and generally faster than parents expect.

“They keep making 'silly mistakes'.”

Repeated sign and fraction errors in algebra aren't carelessness — they're an unsecured skill showing up under load. We track the specific error patterns and drill those rather than telling a student to check their work.

“Do they need to redo Algebra 1 before Algebra 2?”

Usually not the whole thing. The assessment identifies which Algebra 1 topics are actually weak, and those get repaired inside Algebra 2 lessons rather than as a separate course.

“Can you match my child's textbook and teacher's method?”

Yes, and it matters — being taught a different method from the one the class uses creates more confusion than it solves. Send the textbook or a photo of a worksheet and the tutor will follow it.

Find out exactly where your child is

The free assessment is one real one-to-one session. Your child works through a few problems, the tutor identifies the specific gaps, and you get an honest recommendation — including if we think tutoring isn't what they need right now.

Algebra tutoring — frequently asked questions

Do you tutor Algebra 1 and Algebra 2?

Yes, plus pre-algebra. Sessions are one-to-one and follow your child's own course and textbook.

My child is failing algebra. How quickly can that change?

Honestly, it depends on whether the problem is the algebra or the arithmetic beneath it. Students whose foundations are sound often improve within a few weeks; students with underlying gaps take a term or so. The free assessment tells you which situation you're in before you spend anything.

Is algebra tutoring different from general math tutoring?

The tutoring format is identical — one-to-one, 45 minutes, same price. The difference is focus: algebra sessions concentrate on algebraic reasoning and the arithmetic that supports it, rather than covering the whole curriculum.

Can you help with algebra in a different curriculum?

Yes. We work with Common Core, US state standards, Canadian provincial courses, the UK National Curriculum (including GCSE), the Australian Curriculum, IB and homeschool programmes.

What does algebra tutoring cost?

From $85/month for two 45-minute one-to-one classes a week — roughly $10.63 a class. No contract, and a 4-class money-back promise.

Book your child's free math assessment

Tell us about your child and we'll match them with a tutor who fits their level, pace and schedule. The assessment is free, and you'll meet the tutor before deciding anything.
