How it works, in short

TaleemSquare AP Calculus tutoring is live, one-to-one exam preparation for AP Calculus AB and BC, in 45-minute video lessons with a shared whiteboard. Tutors teach the course units, then train your child on the exam itself: no-calculator multiple choice, graphing-calculator questions and handwritten free-response answers that show every step.

On the May 2027 exam, the multiple-choice section has 42 questions in 1 hour 40 minutes and the free-response section has 6 questions in 1 hour 30 minutes. Lessons start after a free assessment, with WhatsApp updates for parents and plans from $85 a month.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Free responses that earn their points

Writes justifications that name the theorem and check its conditions, the way AP free-response scoring expects.

Quick without a calculator

Handles Part A of the multiple-choice section, 29 questions in 62 minutes, with clean algebra and fast recognition of standard question types.

Uses the graphing calculator well

Graphs, finds intersections, evaluates derivatives at a point and computes definite integrals on the calculator, and knows which parts require it.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Limits and derivatives (Units 1-3)

Limits, continuity, derivative rules, the chain rule, implicit differentiation and inverse functions, practised in the short multiple-choice format the exam uses.

Applying derivatives (Units 4-5)

Related rates, motion, linearization, the Mean Value Theorem, extrema and curve analysis, with the written reasoning free-response questions ask for.

Integration and accumulation (Unit 6)

Riemann sums, the Fundamental Theorem, accumulation functions and antiderivatives, read from graphs, tables and formulas as AP questions present them.

Differential equations (Unit 7)

Slope fields, separable equations and exponential models, plus Euler's method and logistic growth for BC students.

Applications of integration (Unit 8)

Average value, motion, area between curves and volumes by cross sections and revolution, with arc length added for BC.

Parametric, polar and vector functions (BC)

Unit 9: derivatives and integrals of parametric and vector-valued functions, polar area and motion in the plane, tested only on the BC exam.

Infinite sequences and series (BC)

Unit 10: convergence tests, power series, Taylor and Maclaurin polynomials and the Lagrange error bound.

Exam technique

Timed sections, pacing between calculator and no-calculator parts, and reading official scoring guidelines to see where free-response points are won.

Signs your child could use help

  • Knows the content but runs out of time on practice exams
  • Free-response answers get partial credit for missing justification
  • Unsure when to reach for the graphing calculator
  • Series and polar questions feel shaky in BC
  • Practice scores sit below what target colleges accept for credit
  • Spring is busy and exam review needs a real plan

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

AP Calculus AB and BC (College Board), May 2027

AB matches first-semester college calculus; BC covers first and second semester. Both exams are on Monday, May 10, 2027, in Session 1, usually the morning. They are hybrid digital and scored 1 to 5, and BC students also receive an AB subscore.

AP Calculus for families in the UK

Some American and international schools in the UK teach AP Calculus. UK universities set their own AP requirements for applicants from US-curriculum schools, and much of the content overlaps with A-level Maths and Further Maths calculus.

AP Calculus in Canadian high schools

Many Canadian high schools offer AP courses, often alongside Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) in Ontario or Math 31 in Alberta. Canadian universities set their own credit and placement policies for AP scores, so check the programs your child is considering.

Level: MCV4U Calculus and Vectors, Math 31

AP Calculus for students in Australia

AP is not part of the state senior certificates, where calculus sits in Mathematical Methods, Specialist or Extension courses. Students at international schools, or those applying to US colleges, follow the College Board course in lessons.

How we prepare students for the AP Calculus exam

Marked like the real thing

Tutors score practice free-response answers against published College Board scoring guidelines, so your child sees which line earned or lost each point.

Two kinds of fluency

Part A rewards quick algebra with no calculator and Part B rewards efficient calculator use, so practice is split to train both.

Units first, then mixed review

During the school year we follow your child's unit order. In the final months, lessons mix units the way the real exam does.

Honest progress checks

A timed practice section every few weeks shows which units still cost points, and the plan you see on WhatsApp changes to match.

Common worries, honest answers

“My child is in BC and worried about series.”

Series usually comes near the end of the BC course, which leaves little time to practise before May. We can preview it early and keep revisiting convergence tests and Taylor polynomials until they feel routine.

“Can you guarantee a 5?”

No, and be cautious of anyone who does. What we offer is a clear plan, regular timed practice and honest feedback on where points are being lost, so your child walks in prepared.

“The exam format changed. Do your materials match?”

Yes. For May 2027 the multiple-choice section has 42 questions instead of 45, with new timing for each part. Tutors time practice to the current format rather than the timing printed on older papers.

Frequently asked questions

What is on the AP Calculus AB exam in May 2027?

There are 3 hours 10 minutes of testing time. Section I has 42 multiple-choice questions: 29 in 62 minutes without a calculator, then 13 in 38 minutes with a graphing calculator. Section II has 6 free-response questions: 2 in 30 minutes with a calculator and 4 in 60 minutes without. Each section is half the score. BC uses the same structure.

Is the AP Calculus exam on paper or on a computer?

It is a hybrid digital exam. Students answer the multiple-choice questions and read the free-response questions in the Bluebook app, then handwrite their free-response work in a paper booklet. The Desmos graphing calculator is built into Bluebook for calculator-required parts, and students may also bring up to two approved handheld calculators.

Should my child take AP Calculus AB or BC?

BC suits students who are confident in precalculus and want to cover two semesters of college calculus in one year. AB moves at a steadier pace and covers one semester. Both share Units 1-8, and BC adds parametric, polar and vector functions and infinite series. The free assessment can help you decide.

How much does an online AP Calculus tutor cost?

At TaleemSquare, one-to-one AP Calculus tutoring starts at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, which is about $10.63 a lesson. Three lessons a week is $119 and four is $149, with no contract, no registration fee and a free first assessment. Private AP Calculus tutors in the US often charge $40-$60 an hour or more.

What is the AB subscore on the BC exam?

Students who take AP Calculus BC receive a separate Calculus AB subscore from 1 to 5, based on the part of the exam covering AB topics. The College Board recommends that colleges treat it like an AP Calculus AB score, though each college decides its own credit policy.

When should AP Calculus exam prep start?

Ideally when the course starts in the fall, so each unit is solid before the next one arrives. Families who start in January or February can still rebuild weak units and complete several timed sections before the exam on May 10, 2027, as long as lessons are regular.
