How it works, in short

TaleemSquare PSAT tutoring is live, one-to-one preparation for the digital PSAT/NMSQT, in 45-minute online lessons. The National Merit Selection Index counts the Reading and Writing score twice, so lessons can cover both sections: math skills for speed and accuracy, and the grammar, vocabulary and reading work behind Reading and Writing.

The PSAT/NMSQT total score runs from 320 to 1520. The Selection Index is twice the Reading and Writing score plus the Math score, divided by 10, on a 48-228 scale, and NMSC uses it as an initial screen. Plans start at $85 a month after a free assessment.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Knows the target

Understands the Selection Index and which section gives the most points for each hour of practice.

A pacing plan for each stage

Works through both sections, each split into two separately timed stages, with a plan for time in every stage.

Fewer easy points lost

Checks algebra and reads Reading and Writing questions closely enough to stop dropping points on questions they know.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Algebra

Linear equations, inequalities, systems and functions, practised for speed and accuracy in the digital test format.

Advanced math

Quadratics, exponential functions and nonlinear equations, with algebraic and graphing approaches compared so students pick the faster one.

Problem solving and data

Ratios, percentages, rates, statistics and reading graphs and tables accurately under time pressure.

Geometry and trigonometry

Area, volume, angles, triangles and right-triangle trigonometry, reviewed for students who last studied them years ago.

Standard English conventions

Grammar, punctuation and sentence boundaries, the rules tested in the Reading and Writing section.

Craft, structure and vocabulary

Words in context, text structure and purpose, practised with short passages in the style of the test.

Selection Index planning

Practice scores turned into a Selection Index, so you can see how much each section moves it.

Signs your child could use help

  • Sophomore or junior hoping for National Merit recognition
  • Practice Selection Index is close to the range you want
  • Math score is well ahead of Reading and Writing
  • Wants a head start before the SAT
  • Loses points to careless algebra errors
  • Unsure how the digital stages affect pacing

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

PSAT/NMSQT (College Board) and National Merit

Section scores run from 160 to 760 and the total from 320 to 1520. The 11th-grade benchmarks are 460 in Reading and Writing and 510 in Math. NMSC uses the Selection Index, from 48 to 228, as an initial screen for its programs.

Students in the UK

Students at American or international schools in the UK may sit the PSAT/NMSQT. National Merit eligibility rules are set by NMSC, so check whether your child qualifies before planning around it. SAT preparation uses the same skills.

Level: Years 11-12

Students in Canada

For Canadian students, the PSAT/NMSQT is mainly useful as SAT practice where a school offers it. National Merit rules are set by NMSC, so check eligibility before planning around recognition.

Level: Grades 10-11

Students in Australia

For students in Australia planning US college applications, the PSAT/NMSQT is mainly SAT practice where an international school offers it. Lessons run in Australian time and use the same digital format.

How we prepare students for the PSAT/NMSQT

Section by section

The free assessment estimates both section scores, so lesson time goes where it moves the Selection Index most.

Reading and Writing counts twice

Because the index doubles the Reading and Writing score, plans often give that section more time than parents expect.

Digital format practice

Practice is timed in two stages per section, matching how the digital test is delivered.

Builds toward the SAT

Everything practised for the PSAT carries over to the SAT, so the work keeps paying off afterwards.

Common worries, honest answers

“Can you guarantee National Merit Semifinalist?”

No. NMSC decides recognition after the test, and qualifying levels are not published in advance. We give a clear plan, timed practice and honest feedback on both sections.

“My child only needs math help.”

That is fine. Because Reading and Writing counts twice in the Selection Index, we will show you what work on it could add, and you decide.

“Is the PSAT worth preparing for?”

For National Merit hopefuls, yes, because the PSAT/NMSQT is the entry test for the program. For everyone else, the preparation counts toward the SAT.

Frequently asked questions

How is the National Merit Selection Index calculated?

Double the Reading and Writing score, add the Math score and divide by 10. For example, a Reading and Writing score of 620 and a Math score of 500 give a Selection Index of 174. The index runs from 48 to 228, and NMSC uses it as an initial screen.

What are the PSAT/NMSQT score ranges?

The total score runs from 320 to 1520 and is the sum of two section scores, Reading and Writing and Math, each from 160 to 760. Each section is split into two equal-length, separately timed stages.

What is a good PSAT score in 11th grade?

The College Board's 11th-grade benchmarks are 460 in Reading and Writing and 510 in Math, which mark students on track for college readiness. National Merit hopefuls aim far higher. Percentiles compare scores with recent 10th and 11th graders worldwide.

How much does an online PSAT tutor cost?

At TaleemSquare, one-to-one PSAT tutoring starts at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, which is about $10.63 a lesson. Three lessons a week is $119 and four is $149, with no contract, no registration fee and a free first assessment. Private PSAT tutors in the US often charge $40-$60 an hour or more.

Which year's PSAT counts for National Merit?

NMSC sets the entry rules for each program year, and for most students the PSAT/NMSQT taken in 11th grade is the qualifying test. Earlier PSATs are useful practice. Check the official requirements for your child's program year.

When should PSAT prep start?

The summer before 11th grade suits most students aiming for National Merit, ideally after a diagnostic in the spring of 10th grade. Students who start in 10th grade can build skills at a gentler pace, which also helps the SAT later.
