How it works, in short

TaleemSquare AP Statistics tutoring is live, one-to-one preparation for the revised AP Statistics course and the May 2027 exam, taught in 45-minute online lessons. Tutors work through the five new units, from exploring data and study design to inference for proportions and means and regression, and practise the new free-response format.

The exam is now fully digital in Bluebook: 42 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes and 4 free-response questions in 90 minutes, each section worth half the score. Older practice materials no longer match it, so tutors adapt them carefully. Plans start at $85 a month.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Handles the new 10-point questions

Answers multi-part free-response questions that combine study design, analysis and interpretation, which the revised exam scores out of 10 points each.

Picks the right inference procedure

Chooses between intervals and tests for proportions, means and paired data, and the chi-square tests that remain in the course.

Reads studies critically

Identifies the investigative question, sampling method and possible bias in a study, then states what conclusions the design allows.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Unit 1: One-variable data and collecting data

Graphs and summary statistics, z-scores, investigative questions, random sampling, bias and experimental design, weighted 20-30% of the multiple-choice section.

Unit 2: Probability and random variables

Two-way tables, probability rules, random variables and probability distributions, including the normal distribution and the empirical rule, weighted 15-25%.

Unit 3: Inference for proportions

Confidence intervals and significance tests for one and two proportions, plus chi-square tests for homogeneity and independence, weighted 15-25%.

Unit 4: Inference for means

t-intervals and t-tests for a single mean, paired differences and two means, with conditions checked and conclusions stated in context, weighted 10-20%.

Unit 5: Regression analysis

Scatterplots, correlation, linear models and least-squares regression lines, interpreted in context, weighted 10-20% of the multiple-choice section.

What was removed

The geometric distribution, combining random variables, chi-square goodness of fit and inference for slope left the course, so exam review skips them.

The four free-response types

Formulating questions and collecting data, analyzing and interpreting results, an inference question, and one question that spans several units.

Calculator and Bluebook skills

Using the built-in Desmos calculator or an approved graphing calculator with statistics functions, and finding reference information on screen quickly.

Signs your child could use help

  • Calculates correctly but conclusions lose points
  • Mixes up which inference procedure fits a question
  • Studying from old practice tests that no longer match the exam
  • Struggles to describe bias and sampling problems
  • Long multi-part questions feel overwhelming
  • Planning a college major that needs statistics

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

AP Statistics (College Board), revised for 2026-27

The earlier units were consolidated into five, some topics were removed and the second-year algebra prerequisite was dropped. The fully digital exam is on Tuesday, May 11, 2027, Session 2, usually the afternoon, and is scored 1 to 5.

AP Statistics for families in the UK

Taught at some American and international schools in the UK. Sampling, probability, distributions and hypothesis testing overlap with the statistics in A-level Maths, though AP free-response questions put heavy weight on written interpretation.

AP Statistics in Canadian schools

Some Canadian high schools offer AP Statistics, sometimes alongside Ontario's Data Management (MDM4U). Probability and data analysis appear in both, so lessons can support the two courses at once.

AP Statistics for students in Australia

AP courses sit outside the state senior certificates, where statistics appears in General Mathematics, Mathematics Standard and Methods. Students at international schools taking AP Statistics get lessons built on the revised College Board framework.

How we prepare students for the AP Statistics exam

Built on the revised framework

Lessons follow the 2026-27 units and the four statistical practices, and older questions on removed topics are filtered out before your child sees them.

Context in every answer

No conclusion is finished until it names the population, the parameter and what the result means in the real situation.

Long questions, broken down

The new 10-point free-response questions combine several skills. We practise splitting them into parts and budgeting time across all four.

Digital exam rehearsal

Your child practises reading, calculating and typing responses on screen, since both sections are now completed in Bluebook.

Common worries, honest answers

“Will practice tests from earlier years still help?”

Partly. Many older multiple-choice questions still fit the new units, but the free-response format and some topics changed. Tutors pick older questions carefully and point out where the current exam differs.

“My child is not strong at algebra.”

AP Statistics no longer lists second-year algebra as a prerequisite, and the course leans on reasoning more than symbolic work. Tutors still shore up any arithmetic or formula skills that slow your child down.

“My child is slow at typing long answers.”

Free responses are now typed in Bluebook instead of handwritten. We practise writing short, complete answers on screen so typing does not eat into thinking time.

Frequently asked questions

What changed in AP Statistics for 2026-27?

The College Board revised the course to match current introductory college statistics. Units were consolidated into five, the second-year algebra prerequisite was removed, and topics such as the geometric distribution, chi-square goodness of fit and inference for slope were dropped. The May 2027 exam is fully digital, with new multiple-choice and free-response formats.

What is the format of the May 2027 AP Statistics exam?

Section I has 42 multiple-choice questions with four answer choices, in 90 minutes. Section II has 4 free-response questions in 90 minutes, each worth 10 points. Each section counts for half the score, and both are completed in the Bluebook app on Tuesday, May 11, 2027.

What calculator can my child use on AP Statistics?

The Desmos graphing calculator is built into Bluebook, and students may also bring an approved graphing calculator with statistics functions. For 2027, nongraphing calculators are not allowed, even ones with statistics features. Reference information is provided in Bluebook and as a printed booklet.

How much does an online AP Statistics tutor cost?

At TaleemSquare, one-to-one AP Statistics tutoring starts at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, which is about $10.63 a lesson. Three lessons a week is $119 and four is $149, with no contract, no registration fee and a free first assessment. Private AP Statistics tutors in the US often charge $40-$60 an hour or more.

Is chi-square still on the AP Statistics exam?

Partly. The chi-square goodness-of-fit test was removed in the revision, but the chi-square tests for homogeneity and independence remain in Unit 3 alongside inference for proportions. Tutors make sure your child can tell the remaining tests apart and state each conclusion in context.

Should my child take AP Statistics instead of AP Calculus?

It depends on your child's plans. AP Statistics suits students heading toward social sciences, health, business or data-related fields, while engineering and the physical sciences usually expect calculus. Some students take both. Talk with the school counselor, and use the free assessment to check readiness.
