How Much Does a Math Tutor Cost in Canada? (2026)

Hourly rates from tutoring companies and marketplaces, what learning centres charge per month, and the free provincial help many families don't know about.

Short answer

Private math tutoring in Canada usually costs about C$45-C$75 an hour. Typical market rates are about C$45-C$55 an hour for elementary and C$54-C$64 for advanced high-school (AP/IB) math, independent marketplaces range from about C$20 to C$100, and senior or university specialists charge more. Learning centres price by the month: published figures put Kumon at around C$100-C$150 per subject and Mathnasium at around C$200-C$300. At one hour a week, private tutoring typically comes to C$195-C$325 a month. TaleemSquare's online one-to-one plans start at C$115 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week (about C$14.38 a lesson).

Canadian families usually compare three very different things when they ask what math tutoring costs: a private one-to-one tutor paid by the hour, a learning centre like Kumon or Mathnasium paid by the month, and free provincial programs. They're priced differently because they're different products.

Below are the typical rates for each, what changes the price, and the free help many families don't know about.

What a month of tutoring actually costs

At one one-hour lesson a week (about 4.3 lessons a month):

  • C$45 an hour is roughly C$195 a month.
  • C$60 an hour is roughly C$260 a month.
  • C$75 an hour is roughly C$325 a month.

Over a ten-month school year, weekly tutoring at C$60 an hour is about C$2,600, which is why it's worth being specific about what the tutoring is meant to fix.

What pushes the price up or down

Grade and course

Elementary math is cheapest. Senior courses such as Advanced Functions and Calculus and Vectors in Ontario, Pre-Calculus 12 in BC, or Math 30-1 and 31 in Alberta cost more because fewer tutors teach them well.

Who the tutor is

University students charge least; certified teachers and specialist tutors charge most. For younger students the ability to find and fix an old gap matters more than credentials.

Centre or one-to-one

Centres cost less per hour of attendance but split the instructor's attention across several students. One-to-one costs more per hour and usually moves faster on a specific problem.

City

In-person rates tend to be highest in large, high-cost cities such as Toronto and Vancouver. Online, your postal code stops mattering.

Costs that don't appear in the hourly rate

  • Registration and assessment fees at many learning centres.
  • Minimum packages or monthly minimums with tutoring companies.
  • Cancellation windows of 24-48 hours.
  • Materials fees for workbooks or online programs.

Ask every provider for the total cost of the first three months, including all fees.

Free help worth using first

  • TVO Learn Mathify (Ontario). Free one-to-one online math tutoring from Ontario Certified Teachers for Grades 4-12, seven days a week. Students sign up with their Ontario Education Number.
  • Your child's teacher. Ask which specific topics are weakest and whether the school runs extra help sessions.
  • Free practice. Khan Academy covers elementary through high-school math. Ontario families can also use EQAO's sample tests to get used to the Grade 9 assessment format.

For Ontario families, Grade 9 math matters more from 2026-27 because the EQAO result now counts for 20% of the final mark. Our Ontario Grade 9 math and EQAO guide explains what changed.

How much does a math tutor cost per hour in Toronto or Ontario?

Expect roughly C$45-C$75 an hour for one-to-one math tutoring in the Toronto area, with senior and specialist tutors charging more. Typical market rates are C$45-C$55 for elementary and C$54-C$64 for advanced high-school (AP/IB) math; some Toronto-only providers list C$65-C$75.

How much is Kumon per month in Canada?

Published figures put Kumon at around C$100-C$150 per subject per month, but fees are set by each centre and those figures are not recent, so check with your local centre. Kumon is worksheet-based practice with short centre visits rather than one-to-one teaching, so the comparison with a private tutor is not like-for-like.

Is Mathnasium worth it compared with a private tutor?

It depends on what your child needs. Mathnasium is centre-based with an instructor working with small groups, at around C$200-C$300 a month in published figures. A one-to-one tutor costs more per hour but gives undivided attention, which usually closes a specific gap faster. If your child mainly needs regular, structured practice, a centre can be good value.

Is there free math tutoring in Ontario?

Yes. TVO Learn Mathify offers free one-to-one online math tutoring from Ontario Certified Teachers for students in Grades 4-12. It runs 9am-9pm ET on weekdays and 3pm-9pm ET on weekends, and students register with their Ontario Education Number (OEN).

Should a math tutor have a police check in Canada?

It's reasonable to ask. A vulnerable sector check generally has to be requested through an organisation, so independent tutors may not hold one; agencies are more likely to. Ask what check the tutor has, how recent it is, and whether you can sit in on lessons. TaleemSquare does not currently hold Canadian police checks for every tutor; parents can join any lesson and sessions can be recorded.
