How Much Does a Maths Tutor Cost in Australia? (2026)

Hourly rates by city and tutor type, why senior maths costs more, the costs hidden in term-based billing, and the free help worth using first.

Short answer

Private maths tutoring in Australia typically costs about A$40-A$85 an hour in 2026. Marketplace tutors cluster around A$40-A$70 an hour, screened managed services charge about A$55-A$70, and experienced teachers or ATAR specialists charge A$95-A$140 or more for senior maths. Online lessons are usually A$10-A$25 an hour cheaper than in-person. At one lesson a week, most families spend roughly A$170-A$370 a month. TaleemSquare's online one-to-one plans start at A$130 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week (about A$16.25 a lesson).

Australian maths tutoring is priced in more ways than in most countries: by the hour, by the term, by the package, in small groups and one-to-one. That makes "how much does a maths tutor cost?" hard to answer from any single price list.

Below are the typical 2026 rates by city and tutor type, what a month or term really costs, the costs hidden in term-based billing, and the free help worth using first.

What a month or term actually costs

At one one-hour lesson a week:

  • A$40 an hour (a typical marketplace tutor) is roughly A$175 a month.
  • A$65 an hour (a typical screened managed service) is roughly A$280 a month.
  • A$120 an hour (a senior ATAR specialist) is roughly A$520 a month.

Many Australian providers bill by the school term, which is about ten weeks. At A$65 an hour that is A$650 paid upfront per term, so it's worth asking what happens to the remaining lessons if it isn't working out after three or four weeks.

What pushes the price up or down

Year level and subject

Primary and junior secondary maths sit at the lower end. Senior maths costs more, and the specialist subjects (Mathematics Extension in NSW, Methods and Specialist in Victoria and Queensland) command the highest rates because fewer tutors can teach them well.

Who the tutor is

University students are cheapest. Qualified teachers and tutors with a track record in ATAR subjects charge the most. For primary and junior secondary maths, the ability to find and fix an old gap matters more than seniority.

One-to-one or small group

Small-group and centre-based classes cost less per student per hour, but the tutor's attention is divided. For a child with a specific gap, one-to-one usually closes it faster.

City and format

In-person rates vary by city and suburb; online, location stops mattering. Online is usually A$10-A$25 an hour cheaper.

Costs that don't appear in the hourly rate

  • Term billing. Upfront payment for a full term, sometimes with limited refunds.
  • Enrolment or assessment fees. Some centres charge a one-off fee before the first lesson.
  • Cancellation windows. Missed lessons without 24-48 hours' notice are usually charged.
  • Minimum commitments. Some providers require a set number of sessions or terms.

Ask every provider for the total cost of the first term, including fees, and what happens if you stop after a month.

Free help worth using first

  • Your child's school. Some schools run small-group tutoring or catch-up programs, sometimes state-funded. Ask whether your child is eligible and which topics the teacher sees as the weakest.
  • Free video lessons. Eddie Woo's free YouTube lessons cover a wide range of high-school maths topics, and Khan Academy covers primary and secondary maths at no cost.
  • NAPLAN reports. If your child sat NAPLAN in Years 3, 5, 7 or 9, the numeracy report is a free starting point. Our NAPLAN numeracy guide explains how to read it.

Where TaleemSquare fits

We teach one-to-one maths online for Foundation to Year 12, following the Australian Curriculum and the NSW, VIC, QLD and WA syllabuses, with lessons scheduled in Australian time zones. Our tutors teach from outside Australia in fluent English, which is the honest reason our prices are lower:

TaleemSquare Australia pricing
StarterLessons: 2 a weekMonthly price: A$130Per 45-minute lesson: A$16.25
GrowthLessons: 3 a weekMonthly price: A$179Per 45-minute lesson: A$14.92
IntensiveLessons: 4 a weekMonthly price: A$229Per 45-minute lesson: A$14.31
Per-lesson figures assume four weeks a month. Billed monthly, not by the term. No enrolment or cancellation fees.

We're the wrong choice if you want in-person lessons, a tutor who holds your state's Working With Children Check, or a specialist with a track record in Mathematics Extension 2 or Specialist Maths. For those, a local specialist is worth the higher rate.

If one-to-one attention at a lower monthly cost is what matters, the free assessment lets you judge the teaching before paying anything. You can also read 12 questions to ask any maths tutor.

How much does a maths tutor cost per hour in Sydney or Melbourne?

Marketplace figures put private maths tutors at about A$40-A$70 an hour in Sydney and A$45-A$60 in Melbourne, with Brisbane at A$31-A$67, Perth at A$40-A$70 and Adelaide at A$22-A$40. Managed tutoring services and experienced teachers charge more, especially for senior maths.

How much does an HSC or VCE maths tutor cost?

Senior maths costs the most. University-student tutors are at the lower end, screened managed services charge about A$55-A$70 an hour, and experienced teachers or ATAR specialists for subjects like Mathematics Extension, Methods and Specialist charge A$95-A$140 or more.

Is online maths tutoring cheaper in Australia?

Usually. Online lessons are typically A$10-A$25 an hour cheaper than in-person lessons because the tutor isn't pricing in travel. For maths, an online lesson with a shared whiteboard works well for most students from about Year 2.

Does a private maths tutor need a Working With Children Check?

Yes. In every state and territory, paid tutoring of children generally counts as child-related work that needs a check: a Working With Children Check in most states, a blue card in Queensland, Working with Vulnerable People registration in the ACT and Tasmania, and an Ochre Card in the Northern Territory. Ask to see the tutor's check number and verify it on your state's online register. TaleemSquare's tutors teach from outside Australia and we don't hold Australian checks for every tutor; parents can join any lesson and sessions can be recorded.

Is tutoring worth it for NAPLAN?

Rarely for NAPLAN alone. NAPLAN is a snapshot, not a pass-or-fail test, and drilling practice papers mostly teaches the test format. Tutoring is worth considering if a NAPLAN report shows 'Developing' or 'Needs additional support' in numeracy and the school's own reports point to the same gaps. Then the aim is the gap, not the test.
