Signs your child could use help

  • GCSE mocks lower than hoped
  • OSSLT coming up
  • Argument essays lack counterarguments
  • Research papers are a struggle
  • PSAT Reading and Writing score lower than math
  • English grade affecting GPA

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Common worries, honest answers

“GCSE exams are only months away.”

Regular lessons focused on set texts and exam technique can still make a real difference.

“My child needs to pass the OSSLT.”

Tutors practise the reading and writing tasks in the OSSLT format and build the underlying skills.

“Can tutors help with research papers?”

Yes, by teaching research and citation skills and giving feedback. The student writes the paper.

Frequently asked questions

What is the OSSLT?

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test is a provincial literacy test administered by EQAO, usually written in Grade 10. Passing it, or completing an alternative literacy course, is a requirement for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

How can I help my 10th grader with English?

Help them plan and space out revision, discuss texts and opinions with them, and encourage them to act on teacher feedback. If they need more support, a tutor can give regular, specific feedback on essays.

When should my child take the PSAT?

Many students take the PSAT/NMSQT in Grade 11, when it counts for National Merit consideration, and some take the PSAT in Grade 10 for practice. Check your school's dates.

How much does a 10th grade reading tutor cost?

TaleemSquare's one-to-one 10th grade reading tutoring starts at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, about $10.63 a lesson. Three lessons a week cost $119 and four cost $149, with no contract, no registration fee and a free first assessment.

Do you tutor GCSE English in Year 11?

Do you also tutor 10th grade math?
