How it works, in short
Eighth grade math tutoring at TaleemSquare is live and one-to-one. Tutors cover linear equations and slope, functions, systems of equations, exponents and scientific notation, irrational numbers, the Pythagorean theorem, transformations and volume. We also support eighth graders taking Algebra 1.
Eighth grade math decides how high school math begins. A free assessment shows where your child stands, and plans start at $85 a month.

What changes after a term of lessons

Understands slope and lines
Graphs linear equations, interprets slope and intercept, and moves between tables, graphs and equations.
Solves systems
Solves pairs of linear equations by graphing, substitution and elimination, and knows what the solution means.
High school ready
Starts Algebra 1 or Geometry with the core skills those courses expect on day one.
What we cover
Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.
Linear equations
Multi-step equations, equations with variables on both sides, and equations with one, none or infinitely many solutions.
Slope and linear functions
Rate of change, slope-intercept form, and comparing functions in different forms.
Systems of equations
Solving by graphing, substitution and elimination, and setting up systems from word problems.
Exponents and scientific notation
Exponent rules, square and cube roots, and very large and small numbers.
Irrational numbers
Rational approximations of irrational numbers and locating them on the number line.
Pythagorean theorem
Using the theorem and its converse in 2D and 3D, including distance between points.
Transformations and volume
Congruence and similarity through transformations, angle facts, and volume of cylinders, cones and spheres.
Signs your child could use help
- Slope and graphing still confusing
- Struggling in an Algebra 1 class in 8th grade
- Multi-step equations break down halfway
- Worried about high school math placement
- Grades slipping as topics get more abstract
- Relies on a calculator for basic operations
One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.
Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live
Common Core Grade 8 or Algebra 1 (state standards)
Grade 8 focuses on linear equations, functions, systems and the Pythagorean theorem. Many students take Algebra 1 in eighth grade instead, and some states give a high school end-of-course test for it.
National Curriculum in England, Year 9 (Key Stage 3 to GCSE)
Year 9 completes Key Stage 3 and, in many schools, starts GCSE content: linear graphs, simultaneous equations, Pythagoras, indices and standard form.
Level: Year 9
Ontario Grade 8 mathematics (other provinces similar)
Rational numbers, exponents, linear relations, the Pythagorean relationship, geometry and data, preparing for the Grade 9 math course. Lessons follow your province's curriculum.
Level: Grade 8
Australian Curriculum v9.0, Year 8
Linear relations and graphs, index laws, irrational numbers, Pythagoras (introduced around Year 8-9), and congruence, preparing for Year 9 NAPLAN.
Level: Year 8

How we teach eighth graders
Connect the representations
Every function is shown as a table, graph and equation so students see they describe the same relationship.
Equations step by step
Students learn a reliable order of steps and check every answer by substituting it back.
Foundations patched as needed
If negatives or fractions break a problem, the tutor fixes that skill on the spot.
Next year in view
Lessons point out how today's topic shows up in Algebra 1 and Geometry, which helps motivation.

Common worries, honest answers
“My child is taking Algebra 1 in 8th grade and finding it hard.”
That is common, because it is a high school course taught a year early. Tutors can support the Algebra 1 class directly while filling any middle school gaps.
“High school placement depends on this year.”
Tutoring helps your child master the content placement tests look at. The decision is the school's, but we can focus lessons on what matters most for it.
“My teen is busy with activities.”
Lessons are online and scheduled in your time zone, including evenings and weekends.
