How it works, in short

Ninth grade math tutoring at TaleemSquare is live and one-to-one. Most ninth graders take Algebra 1, while some take Geometry or Integrated Math I, so the tutor follows whichever course your child is in: linear functions, systems, exponents, polynomials, factoring and quadratics, or geometry proofs.

Ninth grade grades go on the high school transcript, so a strong start matters. Plans start at $85 a month after a free assessment.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Confident with linear functions

Writes, graphs and interprets linear equations and solves systems in context.

Factors and solves quadratics

Factors expressions and solves quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square and the formula.

A strong first transcript grade

Keeps up with the course week to week instead of rescuing a grade before finals.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Linear equations and inequalities

Solving, rearranging formulas and graphing in slope-intercept and point-slope form.

Functions

Function notation, domain and range, and comparing linear and exponential functions.

Systems of equations

Graphing, substitution and elimination, plus systems of inequalities.

Exponents and exponential functions

Exponent rules, growth and decay, and reading exponential graphs.

Polynomials and factoring

Adding, subtracting and multiplying polynomials, and factoring trinomials and special products.

Quadratic functions

Graphs, vertex, solving by factoring, completing the square and the quadratic formula.

Statistics

Scatter plots, lines of best fit, correlation and two-way tables.

Signs your child could use help

  • First high school math grade is lower than expected
  • Factoring makes no sense yet
  • Struggles to keep up with the pace of the course
  • Feels lost in a larger high school class
  • End-of-course exam coming up
  • Losing interest in math

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

Algebra 1, Geometry or Integrated Math I (state standards)

Most ninth graders take Algebra 1. Many states, including Texas, Florida, Virginia and New York, give an end-of-course or Regents exam in Algebra 1. We follow your child's course and exam.

GCSE Maths, Year 10

Year 10 is the first year of most GCSE Maths courses: algebra, graphs, ratio, geometry and statistics at Foundation or Higher tier. Exams come at the end of Year 11.

Level: Year 10 (GCSE)

Grade 9 mathematics (Ontario MTH1W; other provinces similar)

Ontario's de-streamed Grade 9 course covers number, algebra, linear relations, geometry, financial literacy and coding. Students take the EQAO Grade 9 math assessment in this course.

Level: Grade 9 (e.g. Ontario MTH1W)

Australian Curriculum v9.0, Year 9

Linear and non-linear relations, index laws, quadratic expansion, Pythagoras and trigonometry, and statistics. Year 9 students sit NAPLAN numeracy in March.

How we teach ninth graders

Course-first lessons

Tutors follow your child's syllabus and pacing so lessons always help with this week's work.

Algebra habits

Neat, line-by-line working and checking answers are taught as habits, because they prevent most lost marks.

Gaps fixed quietly

Missing middle school skills are repaired as they come up, without making your child feel behind.

Exam planning

Before end-of-course exams, Regents or GCSE mocks, lessons switch to timed practice and review.

Common worries, honest answers

“My teen thinks they can handle it alone.”

That may be true. The free assessment gives an independent view. If your child is on track, we will say so.

“The first test went badly. Is it too late?”

No. Early in the year is the best time to change direction. Regular lessons usually stabilize the grade within a few units.

“We need help with the Algebra 1 end-of-course exam.”

Tutors can build a review plan for your state's exam, including timed practice with released questions where available.

Frequently asked questions

What math do 9th graders take?

Most US ninth graders take Algebra 1. Students who took Algebra 1 in eighth grade usually take Geometry, and some states and districts use Integrated Math I instead. In England, Year 10 students are in the first year of GCSE Maths.

What is taught in Algebra 1?

Algebra 1 covers linear equations and inequalities, functions, systems of equations, exponents and exponential functions, polynomials and factoring, quadratic functions and equations, and basic statistics such as scatter plots and lines of best fit.

Do 9th grade math grades matter for college?

Yes. In the US, ninth grade grades count toward the high school GPA that colleges see. A strong start also opens doors to more advanced math courses later in high school.

How much does a 9th grade math tutor cost?

TaleemSquare's one-to-one 9th grade math tutoring starts at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, about $10.63 a lesson, with three a week at $119 and four at $149. There is no contract or registration fee, and you can cancel any month. The first assessment is free, so you can see the teaching before paying anything.

Can you help with the Regents Algebra 1 exam?

Yes. For New York students, tutors follow the Algebra 1 Regents content and practise with past exam questions in the final months before the exam.

Do you tutor GCSE maths?

Yes. For students in England, tutors follow GCSE Maths at Foundation or Higher tier using your child's exam board. See our GCSE maths guide for parents too.
