How it works, in short

Second grade math tutoring at TaleemSquare is live and one-to-one. The tutor focuses on fluent addition and subtraction within 100, place value to 1,000, regrouping, money, time to five minutes and the first steps toward multiplication with arrays and skip counting.

Second grade is where regrouping and place value either click or start causing trouble. A free assessment shows which, and lessons start at $85 a month.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Fluent with facts within 20

Knows addition facts from memory and uses them to subtract, so bigger problems stop feeling slow.

Regroups with understanding

Explains carrying and borrowing with tens and ones, rather than following steps it does not understand.

Handles money and time

Counts coins and bills and reads clocks to five minutes in everyday situations.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Place value to 1,000

Hundreds, tens and ones, expanded form and comparing three-digit numbers.

Addition and subtraction within 100

Mental strategies and written methods with regrouping, checked with models.

Adding and subtracting within 1,000

Using place value and drawings for larger numbers.

Skip counting and arrays

Counting by 5s, 10s and 100s and using arrays as a first step to multiplication.

Money

Counting dollars and cents, and simple word problems with coins and bills.

Time and measurement

Telling time to five minutes, a.m. and p.m., and measuring in inches, feet, centimeters and meters.

Data and shapes

Picture graphs and bar graphs, odd and even numbers, and splitting shapes into halves, thirds and fourths.

Signs your child could use help

  • Still uses fingers for most addition facts
  • Borrowing in subtraction goes wrong every time
  • Mixes up the tens and ones digits
  • Can't count coins without help
  • Says math is boring or too hard
  • Homework takes much longer than it should

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

Common Core Grade 2 (or your state's standards)

Grade 2 builds fluency with addition and subtraction within 100, place value to 1,000, measurement in standard units, money and time. Children should know all sums of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of the year.

How we teach second graders

Base-ten blocks on screen

Virtual blocks show exactly what happens when we regroup, so carrying and borrowing make sense.

Facts through strategy

Children learn doubles, making ten and related facts, which builds recall faster than memorizing lists.

Real-life math

Shopping, cooking and clock games give money, measurement and time a reason to matter.

Calm pace

If a child is frustrated, the tutor steps back to an easier level and builds up again.

Common worries, honest answers

“My child can do it at home but not at school.”

That often means the skill is not yet secure. Short, regular practice with a tutor helps it become automatic so it holds up in class.

“Will tutoring make my child feel there is something wrong?”

Tutors keep lessons positive and game-like. Most children see it as special one-to-one time rather than extra school.

“Can the tutor follow what the teacher is doing?”

Yes. Share worksheets or the topic list and the tutor will align lessons with your child's class.

Frequently asked questions

What math should a 2nd grader know?

By the end of second grade, most children can add and subtract within 100 fluently, know all sums of two one-digit numbers from memory, understand place value to 1,000, skip count by 5s, 10s and 100s, count money, tell time to the nearest five minutes and read simple bar graphs.

How can I help my 2nd grader with subtraction with regrouping?

Use objects or drawings first: bundles of ten sticks or coins make it clear why we break a ten into ones. Ask your child to explain each step out loud. If they rely on a rule they don't understand, a tutor can rebuild it with models.

Is it normal for a 2nd grader to count on fingers?

Many second graders still use fingers for some facts, and that is normal early in the year. If your child relies on fingers for most facts by the end of the year, targeted strategy practice usually helps.

How much does a 2nd grade math tutor cost?

TaleemSquare's one-to-one 2nd grade math tutoring starts at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, about $10.63 a lesson, with three a week at $119 and four at $149. There is no contract or registration fee, and you can cancel any month. The first assessment is free, so you can see the teaching before paying anything.

How many lessons a week does a 2nd grader need?

Two lessons a week suits most second graders. If your child is well behind or very anxious, three a week for a few months can help them catch up faster.

Do you also help with reading?

Yes. TaleemSquare also offers one-to-one reading and English tutoring with the same format and prices. Many second graders work on both, and some families split lessons between math and reading. See our 2nd grade reading tutoring page for details.
