How it works, in short

TaleemSquare linear algebra tutoring is live and one-to-one, 45 minutes per lesson, for advanced high school students and first-year college students. Tutors cover vectors, matrices, systems of equations, determinants, vector spaces, linear transformations and eigenvalues.

This is the top end of what we teach. At the free assessment we look at your syllabus and tell you honestly whether we are the right fit before you commit.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Solves systems reliably

Uses row reduction confidently and interprets the result: one solution, none or infinitely many.

Sees matrices as transformations

Pictures what a matrix does to space, which makes determinants and inverses far easier to understand.

Handles abstract ideas

Works with span, basis, dimension and eigenvectors with clear reasoning rather than memorized steps.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Vectors

Vector arithmetic, dot and cross products, lines and planes in space, and projections.

Systems and row reduction

Gaussian elimination, echelon forms and interpreting solution sets.

Matrix algebra

Matrix operations, inverses, and when an inverse exists.

Determinants

Computing determinants and understanding them as area and volume scaling.

Vector spaces

Span, linear independence, basis, dimension, rank and null space.

Linear transformations

Matrices as functions, kernel and image, and change of basis.

Eigenvalues and eigenvectors

Characteristic polynomials, diagonalization and simple applications.

Signs your child could use help

  • Can row reduce but can't interpret the result
  • Proof-based questions feel abstract and confusing
  • Struggling with span and linear independence
  • Lectures move too fast to follow
  • Exam or midterm coming up soon
  • Taking linear algebra early, alongside high school

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

Introductory college linear algebra and advanced high school courses

Linear algebra is usually a first- or second-year college course. Some advanced high school students take it through dual enrollment or after AP Calculus BC. We work from the course syllabus and textbook.

A-level Further Mathematics and first-year university

Matrices and vectors appear in A-level Further Maths, and linear algebra is a core first-year module in many university STEM degrees.

Level: A-level Further Maths (matrices)

Calculus and Vectors and first-year university linear algebra

Vectors appear in Ontario's MCV4U, and linear algebra is a standard first-year course at Canadian universities.

Level: Calculus and Vectors, first-year university

Specialist Mathematics, Extension 2 and first-year university

Vectors appear in VCE and QCE Specialist Mathematics and NSW Extension 2. Full linear algebra is a first-year university topic.

How we teach linear algebra

Pictures for every idea

We show vectors, spans and transformations geometrically in two and three dimensions before moving to abstract notation.

Computation with meaning

Every row reduction or determinant is followed by a question about what the result tells us.

Proof support

For proof-based courses, tutors show how to use definitions to structure an argument.

Syllabus-led

Lessons follow your course outline and problem sets, so time goes where your grade needs it.

Common worries, honest answers

“Is linear algebra within what your tutors teach?”

It is the top of our range. We only take linear algebra students after checking the syllabus at the free assessment, and we will tell you if a course is beyond what we offer.

“I am a college student, not a child. Is that okay?”

Yes. Many of our advanced students are in their first year of college. You can book the assessment yourself.

“Can you help with graded problem sets?”

Tutors explain the methods using similar problems. Graded work must stay your own, in line with your college's academic integrity policy.

Frequently asked questions

What is linear algebra used for?

Linear algebra is used throughout science, engineering, economics, computer graphics, data science and machine learning. It provides the tools for working with systems of equations, transformations and large data sets, which is why it is a required course in most STEM degrees.

Is linear algebra harder than calculus?

It is different rather than strictly harder. The computations are often simpler than calculus, but the ideas are more abstract, especially vector spaces and proofs. Students who rely on procedures may find it harder at first.

Can high school students take linear algebra?

Some advanced high school students take linear algebra after AP Calculus BC, often through dual enrollment with a local college. It is less common, but our tutors can support students taking it early.

How much does an online linear algebra tutor cost?

At TaleemSquare, one-to-one linear algebra tutoring starts at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, which is about $10.63 a lesson. Three lessons a week is $119 and four is $149, with no contract, no registration fee and a free first assessment. Private linear algebra tutors in the US often charge $40-$60 an hour or more.

Do you tutor other college math courses?

We focus on K-12 math, with calculus, statistics and linear algebra as the advanced end. For other college courses, share the syllabus at the free assessment and we will tell you honestly if we can help.

What do I need for online linear algebra lessons?

A laptop or tablet with Zoom. A tablet with a stylus makes writing matrices easier, but a mouse or trackpad on the shared whiteboard works too.
