How it works, in short

TaleemSquare precalculus tutoring is a live, one-to-one lesson of 45 minutes covering the course your child is taking now: advanced functions, trigonometric functions and identities, exponential and logarithmic models, vectors and an introduction to limits.

Precalculus is where students either build the algebra fluency calculus needs or carry gaps into a harder course. A free assessment shows which it is, and plans start at $85 a month.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Fluent with function behavior

Analyzes domain, range, asymptotes, inverses and transformations for any function type in the course.

Comfortable with trigonometry

Uses the unit circle, radians and identities to simplify expressions and solve trig equations.

Calculus-ready algebra

Simplifies complex fractions and expressions quickly and accurately, the main skill calculus teachers assume.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Functions in depth

Polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions, their graphs, inverses and compositions.

The unit circle and radians

Exact values, reference angles and converting between degrees and radians without a calculator.

Trig graphs and identities

Amplitude, period and phase shift, Pythagorean, sum and double-angle identities, and proving identities.

Solving trig equations

Finding all solutions in an interval and using identities to rewrite equations.

Vectors and parametric equations

Vector operations, components and an introduction to parametric and polar forms where the course includes them.

Sequences, series and limits

Arithmetic and geometric series and a first look at limits and rates of change.

Signs your child could use help

  • Struggling with the unit circle and exact values
  • Algebra mistakes ruin otherwise correct trig work
  • Planning to take AP Calculus next year
  • Grade has slipped since the course got abstract
  • Relies on the calculator for everything
  • Proving identities feels impossible

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

Precalculus (state standards; prepares for AP Calculus)

Usually taken in Grade 11 or 12 after Algebra 2, sometimes called Pre-calculus, Advanced Math or Math Analysis. We follow your child's course and can preview AP Calculus topics for students heading there.

A-level Mathematics: pure content

Functions, exponentials and logarithms, trigonometry and identities, sequences and series are core pure topics in AS and A-level Maths. We work from your child's exam board and use past-paper style questions.

Level: A-level Maths (pure content)

Grade 12 Advanced Functions and Pre-calculus 12

Ontario's MHF4U and BC's Pre-calculus 12 cover polynomial, rational, logarithmic and trigonometric functions. These are prerequisites for calculus, so we focus on fluency.

Level: Grade 12 Advanced Functions (MHF4U)

Senior mathematics: Methods and Advanced

Functions, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms in Year 11-12 Mathematical Methods (VIC, QLD) or Mathematics Advanced (NSW). Lessons follow the state syllabus and exam style.

Level: Year 11-12 Methods or Advanced

How we teach precalculus

Algebra fluency on purpose

Short daily algebra drills target the manipulation errors that cost precalculus students the most marks.

Unit circle until it is automatic

We build the unit circle from special triangles so exact values are understood, not just memorized.

Connect every function type

Your child sees the same questions asked of every function: domain, range, intercepts, asymptotes, inverse.

One eye on calculus

Where it helps, the tutor shows how today's topic is used in calculus, which makes the effort feel worthwhile.

Common worries, honest answers

“My child is taking AP Calculus next year and is nervous.”

That is a good reason to strengthen precalculus now. Students who arrive in calculus with solid algebra and trig spend their time on the new ideas instead of fighting old gaps.

“Can you help in the last weeks before finals?”

Yes. We will prioritize the topics worth the most marks, but starting earlier gives better results.

“My teen is busy with sports and activities.”

Lessons are online and scheduled in your time zone, including evenings and weekends, so they fit around training and other commitments.

Frequently asked questions

What is covered in precalculus?

Precalculus usually covers advanced functions (polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic), trigonometric functions and identities, the unit circle, solving trig equations, vectors, sequences and series, and an introduction to limits. Some courses include parametric and polar equations and conic sections.

Is precalculus harder than Algebra 2?

Many students find it harder because it combines Algebra 2 skills with trigonometry and expects more fluency. Students with gaps in algebra feel it most. A tutor can strengthen those skills while keeping up with the course.

Do I need precalculus before AP Calculus?

Most schools require precalculus, or an equivalent course, before AP Calculus AB or BC. The College Board recommends that students have completed courses covering algebra, geometry, trigonometry and elementary functions before taking AP Calculus.

How much does an online precalculus tutor cost?

At TaleemSquare, one-to-one precalculus tutoring starts at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, which is about $10.63 a lesson. Three lessons a week is $119 and four is $149, with no contract, no registration fee and a free first assessment. Private precalculus tutors in the US often charge $40-$60 an hour or more.

Can you help with the unit circle?

Yes, it is one of the most requested topics. The tutor builds it from 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles so your child understands where each value comes from and can rebuild it under exam pressure.

Do you tutor A-level or IB students in this content?

Yes. The same functions and trigonometry content appears in A-level Maths and IB Mathematics. See our IB math tutoring page for IB-specific support.
