Digital SAT Math Explained: Format, What's Tested and How to Prepare
How the adaptive Math section works, which topics carry the most questions, the remaining 2026-27 dates, and the free resources worth using first.
Short answer
The digital SAT Math section has 44 questions in two 35-minute modules (70 minutes in total), and the second module is harder or easier depending on how the first went. A calculator is allowed on every Math question, including the Desmos calculator built into the Bluebook testing app. Questions come from four areas: Algebra (13-15 questions), Advanced Math (13-15), Problem-Solving and Data Analysis (5-7) and Geometry and Trigonometry (5-7). The remaining SAT Weekend dates for 2026-27 are November 7 and December 5, 2026, and March 6, May 1 and June 5, 2027.
The SAT went fully digital in the US in March 2024, and the Math section changed more than most parents realize: it's shorter, it adapts to the student, and a calculator is allowed throughout. That changes what good preparation looks like.
How the Math section is built
| Feature | Digital SAT Math |
|---|---|
| Questions | Digital SAT Math: 44 |
| Time | Digital SAT Math: 70 minutes, in two 35-minute modules |
| Adaptive | Digital SAT Math: Yes. Module 2 is harder or easier depending on module 1 |
| Calculator | Digital SAT Math: Allowed on every question; Desmos is built into Bluebook |
| Question types | Digital SAT Math: Mostly multiple choice, plus some typed-in answers |
| Scoring | Digital SAT Math: Math is scored 200-800; the total SAT is 400-1600 |
The adaptive design matters for strategy. The first module decides which second module a student gets, so careless errors early on cost more than they seem to. Accuracy in module 1 is worth more than speed.
What's tested
College Board groups the Math questions into four content areas:
| Content area | Questions | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Algebra | Questions: 13-15 | What it covers: Linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations, linear functions and graphs |
| Advanced Math | Questions: 13-15 | What it covers: Quadratics, exponential and other nonlinear functions, equivalent expressions |
| Problem-Solving and Data Analysis | Questions: 5-7 | What it covers: Ratios, rates, percentages, probability, and reading data from tables and graphs |
| Geometry and Trigonometry | Questions: 5-7 | What it covers: Area and volume, lines and angles, triangles, right-triangle trigonometry and circles |
The takeaway: Algebra and Advanced Math make up most of the section. A student who is shaky on linear equations and functions will lose marks across the whole test, not just in one topic.

How to prepare
- Start with a full practice test. College Board's Bluebook app has free full-length practice tests that use the real adaptive format. The score report shows which areas cost the most marks.
- Use the official free prep. Khan Academy offers free official digital SAT prep in partnership with College Board, organized by the same content areas.
- Learn the Desmos calculator before test day. Graphing an equation to find an intersection or a vertex can turn a long algebra question into a quick one. It only helps if your child has practiced with it.
- Keep an error log. For every wrong answer, note the content area and the reason: didn't know it, misread it, or arithmetic slip. Patterns show up within a few practice sets.
- Practice under time. 70 minutes for 44 questions is about 95 seconds a question. Timed module practice matters more in the final weeks than new content.
When tutoring helps
If practice tests show the same algebra and functions questions going wrong, more practice tests won't fix it. The gap is usually in skills from Algebra 1 or earlier, and that's where one-to-one help is worth the money: finding exactly where understanding stops and rebuilding from there.
TaleemSquare teaches one-to-one math online, including the algebra, functions, geometry and data skills the SAT tests, from $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week. We're a math tutoring service, not a specialist test-prep company, and we don't promise score increases.
