FSA literacy and BC's graduation literacy assessments in Surrey
- In the fall of Grade 4 and Grade 7, BC children complete the FSA literacy component: 30 online questions in up to 60 minutes, plus a paper booklet with a teamwork activity and three written answers in another 60 minutes.
- Teachers mark the booklets on the provincial proficiency scale, reported as Emerging, On Track or Extending, and parents receive the marked booklet. The FSA does not impact marks or report cards.
- To graduate, BC students must write the Grade 10 Literacy Assessment and the Grade 12 Literacy Assessment. In 2026-27 both are offered in sessions in November 2026 and January, April and June 2027.
- Language Arts 10, 11 and 12 are each required courses worth 4 credits toward the 80 needed for the BC Certificate of Graduation.
A tutor can work on the comprehension and written answers the FSA asks for in Grades 4 and 7, then build the reading stamina and clear writing that the Grade 10 and 12 literacy assessments and senior English courses need.
