Reading screening and English PATs in Calgary
- Alberta requires literacy screening for every child from Kindergarten to Grade 3, and from 2026-27 in Grades 4 and 5 too. Early grades are checked on letter sounds, word reading and nonword decoding; Grades 4 and 5 read maze passages.
- Grade 6 students write the English Language Arts and Literature PAT in two parts: Part A on 2 June and Part B on 4 June 2027. Alberta's new K to 6 English language arts and literature curriculum is now taught in every elementary grade.
- Grade 9 English Language Arts PATs are written on 20 and 21 January or 3 and 8 June 2027. All students can have up to double the scheduled time.
- Schools must share preliminary PAT results with parents by the end of the school year, and Individual Student Profiles are posted to myPass each fall.
A tutor can start with whatever a screening flags, from decoding to fluency, then build the comprehension and writing a Grade 6 or Grade 9 English PAT asks for, using the test dates as a steady target.
