FSA numeracy and the path to Math 11 in Surrey

  • Every BC student in Grades 4 and 7 completes the Foundation Skills Assessment numeracy component in the fall: 30 online questions in up to 60 minutes and three written-answer questions in 45 minutes. The 2026 window is 28 September to 6 November.
  • FSA results use the same proficiency scale as report cards from Kindergarten to Grade 9, grouped as Emerging, On Track and Extending. They do not affect marks, and the marked booklet comes home.
  • The Grade 10 Numeracy Assessment is a graduation requirement with 24 computer-scored questions and two written-response questions chosen from four. In 2026-27 it is offered in November, January, April and June sessions.
  • After Mathematics 10, students choose Workplace Mathematics 11, Foundations of Mathematics 11 or Pre-calculus 11, then options such as Pre-calculus 12, Foundations of Mathematics 12, Calculus 12 and Statistics 12. A Math 11 or 12 credit is required to graduate.

A tutor can turn an Emerging FSA result into a plan for Grade 5 or Grade 8, prepare the multi-step written questions the Grade 10 assessment uses, and keep a Pre-calculus 11 student up with the pace of the course.

Math tutoring in Surrey: questions

Are your math tutors based in Surrey?

No. TaleemSquare tutors teach online, so Surrey families get one-to-one math lessons without travelling to a center. Lessons are scheduled in Pacific Time and follow the British Columbia curriculum your child uses at school.

Do you follow the British Columbia math curriculum?

Yes. Tutors align lessons with the British Columbia K-12 Mathematics Curriculum and with your child's own school work. Share homework, worksheets or the topic list and the tutor will match it.

Can you help my child prepare for the Foundation Skills Assessment?

Yes. Local tests include: Foundation Skills Assessment in Grades 4 and 7, and the Graduation Numeracy Assessment, usually in Grade 10. Tutors build the underlying math skills first, then practise questions in the right format as the test approaches.

How much does a math tutor in Surrey cost?

TaleemSquare plans start at C$115 a month for two 45-minute one-to-one lessons a week, about C$14.38 a lesson. Three lessons a week cost C$159 and four cost C$199. There is no contract, and the first assessment is free.

What times are lessons available in Surrey?

Lessons are scheduled in Pacific Time, usually after school on weekdays or at weekends. Your child keeps the same tutor and weekly slots, which you agree after the free assessment.

What does the FSA numeracy assessment involve for a Grade 4 or 7 child in Surrey?

BC's parent guide describes an online component of 30 questions in up to 60 minutes, and a paper booklet with three written-answer questions and a self-reflection question in about 45 minutes, spread over several days or weeks in the fall. Children do not need to prepare, and the result does not affect report card marks. Our tutors use the returned booklet to see which concepts need work.
