From de-streamed Grade 9 English to the OSSLT in Toronto

  • In Ontario, Grade 9 English is a de-streamed course taken by all students, and the OSSLT that follows in Grade 10 measures reading and writing expectations across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9.
  • The OSSLT is written online at school in two sessions of about 65 and 75 minutes, with 37 questions. Results are reported on a 200 to 400 scale, and 300 is needed for a successful outcome.
  • In 2026-27 the OSSLT windows are 3 to 30 November 2026 and 30 March to 19 April 2027. Passing it, or completing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course, is required for the OSSD.
  • Grade 6 students take the EQAO junior assessment, with four language sessions of about 35 minutes each, between 4 May and 8 June 2027. Results do not appear on report cards.

A tutor can build the reading comprehension, vocabulary and written answers the OSSLT expects, starting in Grade 7 or 8 if needed, and keep a Grade 9 student on track in English before the test year.

Reading tutoring in Toronto: questions

Are your reading tutors based in Toronto?

No. TaleemSquare tutors teach online, so Toronto families get one-to-one reading lessons without travelling to a center. Lessons are scheduled in Eastern Time and follow the Ontario curriculum your child uses at school.

Do you follow the Ontario English curriculum?

Yes. Tutors align lessons with the Ontario Language Curriculum (2023) and secondary English courses and with your child's own school work. Share homework, worksheets or the topic list and the tutor will match it.

Can you help my child prepare for EQAO reading and writing?

Yes. Local tests include: EQAO reading and writing in Grades 3 and 6, and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, usually in Grade 10. Tutors build the underlying reading skills first, then practise questions in the right format as the test approaches.

How much does a reading tutor in Toronto cost?

TaleemSquare plans start at C$115 a month for two 45-minute one-to-one lessons a week, about C$14.38 a lesson. Three lessons a week cost C$159 and four cost C$199. There is no contract, and the first assessment is free.

What times are lessons available in Toronto?

Lessons are scheduled in Eastern Time, usually after school on weekdays or at weekends. Your child keeps the same tutor and weekly slots, which you agree after the free assessment.

What does the OSSLT actually test?

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test checks whether a student meets the minimum standard for literacy across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9. It has 35 selected-response questions and two written open-response questions over two sessions. Students are expected to write it for the first time in Grade 10. Our tutors practise both the reading and the written responses.
