Early reading screening and EQAO reading in Mississauga

  • Ontario schools must screen every child in Year 2 of Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 for early reading, including letter sounds and decoding words. The first screening is done before mid-November.
  • Children who do not meet the benchmark are screened again by mid-March. Schools must share each child's results with parents, and they appear on the report card.
  • In Grade 3 and Grade 6, children complete the EQAO language component online: two reading sessions, two writing sessions and a final reading or writing session, each about 35 minutes.
  • The 2026-27 EQAO window is 4 May to 8 June 2027, and the questions are built on The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1 to 8: Language (2023).

A tutor can work on exactly what the screening flags, from letter sounds and decoding to fluency, then move on to the comprehension and written responses EQAO asks for in Grades 3 and 6.

Reading tutoring in Mississauga: questions

Are your reading tutors based in Mississauga?

No. TaleemSquare tutors teach online, so Mississauga families get one-to-one reading lessons without travelling to a center. Lessons are scheduled in Eastern Time and follow the Ontario curriculum your child uses at school.

Do you follow the Ontario English curriculum?

Yes. Tutors align lessons with the Ontario Language Curriculum (2023) and secondary English courses and with your child's own school work. Share homework, worksheets or the topic list and the tutor will match it.

Can you help my child prepare for EQAO reading and writing?

Yes. Local tests include: EQAO reading and writing in Grades 3 and 6, and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, usually in Grade 10. Tutors build the underlying reading skills first, then practise questions in the right format as the test approaches.

How much does a reading tutor in Mississauga cost?

TaleemSquare plans start at C$115 a month for two 45-minute one-to-one lessons a week, about C$14.38 a lesson. Three lessons a week cost C$159 and four cost C$199. There is no contract, and the first assessment is free.

What times are lessons available in Mississauga?

Lessons are scheduled in Eastern Time, usually after school on weekdays or at weekends. Your child keeps the same tutor and weekly slots, which you agree after the free assessment.

What is the early reading screening in Ontario schools?

Under Policy/Program Memorandum 168, every child in Year 2 of Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 is screened on foundational reading skills such as identifying letters and sounds and decoding words. The first screening happens before mid-November, and a second, by mid-March, is required for children who did not meet the benchmark. Results go to parents. Our tutors turn those results into a reading plan.
