De-streamed Grade 9 math and EQAO in Toronto
- Every Ontario student takes the same de-streamed Grade 9 math course, MTH1W. Its strands are Number, Algebra, Data, Geometry and Measurement, and Financial Literacy, and the split into academic and applied courses only begins in Grade 10.
- Students in MTH1W write the EQAO Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics online at school. Starting in 2026-27 it counts as the course's written exam and is weighted at 20% of the final mark.
- The 2026-27 windows are 12 January to 5 February 2027 and 8 June to 30 June 2027. Your child's school sets the exact dates within one of these windows.
- Grade 10 math is streamed into academic and applied courses, and course selection for the next year usually happens in January, while Grade 9 is still under way.
A tutor can work through the MTH1W strands alongside your child's class, fill gaps from Grades 7 and 8, and practise the EQAO question types, so the 20% assessment and the Grade 10 course choice both feel manageable.
