Algebra I, Ohio's new math law and the Walnut Hills exam

  • Ohio students need four math credits to graduate, including Algebra II or its equivalent unless they follow a career-technical pathway. They also need a competency score of 684 on the Algebra I end-of-course test, or another approved option after at least one retake.
  • Under Senate Bill 19, from July 1, 2027, districts must place qualifying sixth graders, by state test score or district criteria, in a course combining grade 7 and 8 math. Those reaching proficient on the grade 8 test then take Algebra I in grade 8. Parents can opt out.
  • Admission to Walnut Hills High School, which serves Grades 7 to 12, requires a qualifying score on the Walnut Hills Entrance Exam. Reading and math national percentile ranks must add up to at least 140, with at least the 65th percentile in each.
  • The entrance exam uses the Iowa Assessments. For 2026-27 it is given on four Saturdays between October 2026 and January 2027.

A tutor can build the grade 6 and 7 skills that compacted math and Algebra I in grade 8 depend on, then support Algebra I and its end-of-course test, Geometry and Algebra II. Families aiming for Walnut Hills can also use sessions to strengthen math before the entrance exam.
