Worth knowing in California

New math programs and middle school placement in San José Unified

  • From August 2026, San José Unified uses Classroom Mathematics California as its core math program through Math 8, and Savvas for Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra II in high school.
  • Middle school students can be placed in Accelerated Math 6 or 7, in Algebra 1, or in Geometry in grade 8 on the most accelerated pathway. Placement depends on demonstrated, mastery-based readiness and is reviewed every year.
  • Students cannot skip a math course or take two at once, and the district does not accept courses taken outside San José Unified for middle school acceleration.
  • Students in grades 3 to 8 and grade 11 take the Smarter Balanced math test on computer each spring, with an adaptive section and a performance task.

Because courses can't be skipped, a tutor can make sure each course's skills are solid before your child moves on. For students aiming at an accelerated pathway, sessions can build the readiness the district looks for, then support Algebra 1 and Geometry.
