Advanced math in Texas middle schools

  • Under Senate Bill 2124, Texas districts automatically enroll students who scored in the top 40% on the grade 5 STAAR math test, or on a local measure, in advanced math in grade 6. Parents can opt out.
  • The program is designed so students can take Algebra I in grade 8. Districts had to start it no later than the 2024-25 school year.
  • Algebra I has a state end-of-course exam that counts toward graduation, and it continues when House Bill 8 replaces STAAR from 2027-28.

If your child is in grade 5 math now, or has just been placed in advanced math in grade 6, a tutor can secure the grade 5 and 6 foundations and keep up with the faster pace of the advanced course.

Math tutoring in Austin: questions

Are your math tutors based in Austin?

No. TaleemSquare tutors teach online, so Austin families get one-to-one math lessons without travelling to a center. Lessons are scheduled in Central Time and follow the Texas curriculum your child uses at school.

Do you follow the Texas math curriculum?

Yes. Tutors align lessons with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Mathematics and with your child's own school work. Share homework, worksheets or the topic list and the tutor will match it.

Can you help my child prepare for STAAR math tests?

Yes. Local tests include: STAAR math tests in Grades 3-8 and the STAAR Algebra I end-of-course exam. Tutors build the underlying math skills first, then practise questions in the right format as the test approaches.

How much does a math tutor in Austin cost?

TaleemSquare plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute one-to-one lessons a week, about $10.63 a lesson. Three lessons a week cost $119 and four cost $149. There is no contract, and the first assessment is free.

What times are lessons available in Austin?

Lessons are scheduled in Central Time, usually after school on weekdays or at weekends. Your child keeps the same tutor and weekly slots, which you agree after the free assessment.

How does a child get into advanced math in grade 6 in Texas?

Senate Bill 2124 requires Texas districts to automatically enroll students who scored in the top 40% on the grade 5 STAAR math test, or on a local measure, in advanced math in grade 6, unless a parent opts out. Districts set their own local measures and opt-out deadlines, so check with your child's school. A tutor can help your child build the grade 5 skills these measures look at.
