Algebra I and the STAAR changes Houston families should know

  • Texas students must pass the STAAR Algebra I end-of-course exam to graduate, although students who miss up to two end-of-course exams can still graduate through an individual graduation committee.
  • House Bill 8 (2025) replaces STAAR from the 2027-28 school year. The Algebra I end-of-course exam continues; English II is the exam being dropped.
  • Since 2024-25, students in the top 40% on grade 5 STAAR math, or a local measure, are placed in advanced math in grade 6 unless a parent opts out, a path designed to reach Algebra I in grade 8.

A tutor can teach Algebra I alongside your child's class, starting with any gaps in pre-algebra, and practice end-of-course style questions in the weeks before the exam.

Math tutoring in Houston: questions

Are your math tutors based in Houston?

No. TaleemSquare tutors teach online, so Houston families get one-to-one math lessons without travelling to a center. Lessons are scheduled in Central Time and follow the Texas curriculum your child uses at school.

Do you follow the Texas math curriculum?

Yes. Tutors align lessons with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Mathematics and with your child's own school work. Share homework, worksheets or the topic list and the tutor will match it.

Can you help my child prepare for STAAR math tests?

Yes. Local tests include: STAAR math tests in Grades 3-8 and the STAAR Algebra I end-of-course exam. Tutors build the underlying math skills first, then practise questions in the right format as the test approaches.

How much does a math tutor in Houston cost?

TaleemSquare plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute one-to-one lessons a week, about $10.63 a lesson. Three lessons a week cost $119 and four cost $149. There is no contract, and the first assessment is free.

What times are lessons available in Houston?

Lessons are scheduled in Central Time, usually after school on weekdays or at weekends. Your child keeps the same tutor and weekly slots, which you agree after the free assessment.

Does my child need to pass the Algebra I end-of-course exam in Texas?

Yes, the STAAR Algebra I end-of-course exam is a graduation requirement, although a student who misses up to two end-of-course exams can still graduate through an individual graduation committee. Algebra I keeps its end-of-course exam after House Bill 8 replaces STAAR from 2027-28, and TEA is still setting the details for later graduating classes. Our tutors teach Algebra I one-to-one, matched to your child's course.
