How it works, in short

TaleemSquare CAASPP math tutoring is live, one-to-one online help for California students preparing for the Smarter Balanced math test in grades 3-8 and 11. A tutor works on the California Common Core skills your child finds hardest and practices both parts of the test: the computer-adaptive questions and the multi-step performance task.

The test is online and untimed. From 2025-26 results, scores use new labels: Advanced, Proficient, Developing and Minimal, with the same cut scores as before. Plans start at $85 a month, with no contract.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Solid on grade-level standards

Fills gaps in the California Common Core skills the test checks, from fractions to functions.

Ready for the performance task

Can read a real-world problem, plan a solution and explain the reasoning, which the performance task rewards.

Comfortable with adaptive questions

Has practiced the online item types, including graphing and constructed response, so harder questions feel manageable.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Number and operations

Place value, fractions, decimals and operations, matched to your child's grade.

Ratios and proportional reasoning

Rates, percents and proportional relationships, central to the middle school tests.

Expressions, equations and functions

Writing and solving equations, and understanding functions in grade 8 and high school.

Geometry and measurement

Area, volume, angles and the coordinate plane, taught with drawings and real examples.

Problem solving and modeling

Multi-step, real-world problems, which feed the Mathematical Practices part of the score report.

Explaining reasoning

Writing short explanations and showing work, which constructed-response and performance-task items ask for.

Grade 11 review

High school algebra, functions, geometry and statistics review for juniors taking the grade 11 test.

Signs your child could use help

  • Scored Developing or Minimal (or Nearly Met or Not Met) last year
  • Struggles to explain answers in words
  • Finds long, multi-step problems overwhelming
  • Has gaps in fractions, ratios or equations
  • Is a junior who wants a strong grade 11 result
  • Wants to move from Proficient to Advanced

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

CAASPP Smarter Balanced Mathematics (California Department of Education)

Given online in grades 3-8 and 11, with a computer-adaptive part and a performance task, and untimed. Districts pick their testing days within the state window, which for 2025-26 ran January 20 to June 30, 2026. The 2026-27 window was not yet published in October 2026.

For families moving from the UK

The Smarter Balanced tests cover roughly the span of Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 maths. We check your child's gaps against the California standards rather than the UK curriculum, then practice the test format.

Level: Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 maths

For families moving from Canada

Provincial courses cover similar topics, but CAASPP follows the California standards and includes a performance task. We map what your child learned and practice explaining reasoning in writing.

Level: Grades 3-11 math

For families moving from Australia

NAPLAN numeracy tests Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. CAASPP tests every grade from 3 to 8 plus grade 11, so we fill gaps against the California standards and practice the performance task.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How CAASPP math lessons work

Start with a skills check

The first lesson finds which grade-level standards your child has secure and which need work, using Smarter Balanced style questions.

Practice both parts of the test

Lessons mix adaptive-style questions with performance-task problems that take several steps to solve.

Explain, don't just answer

Your child practices saying and writing why an answer works, which lifts both class grades and test scores.

Updates for parents

You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

Common worries, honest answers

“Is CAASPP worth preparing for?”

Yes. The results show which areas your child is secure in, and the same skills drive classwork and later math courses. For juniors, grade 11 results can also be shared with the CSU system.

“My child is good at math but scores lower on CAASPP. Why?”

The test asks students to explain reasoning and solve multi-step problems, not just compute. Practice with performance-task style problems usually closes that gap.

“Will extra test practice stress my child out?”

We keep sessions short and positive and focus on understanding, not drilling. Knowing what the test looks like usually makes children calmer, not more anxious.

Frequently asked questions

When is the CAASPP math test?

Districts choose at least 25 instructional days within the statewide window. For the 2025-26 school year that window ran from January 20 to June 30, 2026. The 2026-27 window had not been published on the official pages when we checked in October 2026, so ask your school for its dates.

Is the CAASPP math test timed?

No, it is untimed. The official CAASPP site estimates about five to six hours in total for English language arts and math combined, so we also work on stamina and focus.

What do the new CAASPP score labels mean?

From 2025-26 results, the four levels are Advanced, Proficient, Developing and Minimal. They replace Standard Exceeded, Met, Nearly Met and Not Met, and the cut scores did not change, so a score means the same as before.

What is on the CAASPP math test?

It has two parts: a computer-adaptive test with selected-response, constructed-response and graphing items, and a performance task with a multi-step, real-world problem. Reports show an overall score plus Concepts and Procedures and Mathematical Practices.

Does the grade 11 CAASPP matter for college?

Grade 11 results can be released to the California State University system through its Early Assessment Program, which is used for placement in college courses.

How much does CAASPP math tutoring cost?

Plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, with no contract. You can start with a free assessment, where the tutor checks your child's level and suggests a plan before testing season.
