How it works, in short

The TaleemSquare summer math program is a set of live, one-to-one online lessons over the school break. The tutor reviews the past year's key skills so they are not forgotten, fixes any gaps, and previews the first units of next year's math.

Lessons fit around travel and camps, and the program works in any hemisphere: June to August in the US, UK and Canada, December to January in Australia. Plans start at $85 a month.

What changes after a term of lessons

Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Skills kept fresh

Your child starts the new year remembering last year's math instead of relearning it.

A head start

The first units of next year feel familiar, which builds confidence in September or February.

Gaps closed without pressure

Summer has no tests or homework, so it is an ideal time to fix older gaps.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Year-in-review

The most important skills from the year just finished, practised until they stick.

Gap repair

Skills that were never fully secure, found in the free assessment.

Next-year preview

The first units of next year's math, taught at a relaxed pace.

Math facts

Times tables, number facts and mental math, kept sharp with games.

Real-world math

Travel budgets, cooking and sports stats make summer math feel useful.

Test preparation

For older students, early SAT, ACT or GCSE preparation if wanted.

Signs your child could use help

  • Last year ended with weak spots in math
  • Your child forgets a lot over the break
  • Starting a new school or a harder course next year
  • Math confidence dropped this year
  • You want structure without a full-day camp
  • Older child heading toward big exams next year

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

Common Core and state standards (summer review and preview)

Summer lessons review the grade your child finished and preview the next grade's standards, using your state's curriculum where possible.

National Curriculum in England (summer holiday)

Lessons consolidate the year just finished and preview the next year group, including the move to secondary school or the start of GCSE courses.

Level: Summer holidays (July-August)

Provincial curricula (summer break)

Review of the finished grade and a preview of the next, following your province's curriculum.

Common worries, honest answers

“Summer should be a break.”

We agree. Two short lessons a week keep skills fresh while leaving plenty of time for rest and fun.

“We travel a lot in summer.”

Lessons can be rescheduled around trips, and they work anywhere with an internet connection.

“Is summer slide real?”

Research has found that many students lose some math skills over the summer, and losses vary widely between children. Regular practice is the simplest way to avoid it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the summer slide in math?

The summer slide is the loss of skills some students experience over the long summer break. Research summarized by the Brookings Institution found that, on average, students' achievement can drop over the summer and that math losses tend to be larger than reading losses, though the size varies a lot between students.

How do I stop the summer slide in math?

Regular, short practice is the most reliable way. Two one-to-one lessons a week, plus everyday math like budgeting or cooking, keep skills fresh. Reviewing last year's key skills and previewing next year's first units helps your child start the year with confidence.

When should a summer math program start?

Starting a week or two after school ends gives children a short break first. Ending a week before school starts leaves time to rest. In Australia, the long break runs over December and January.

How much does the summer math program cost?

Plans are $85 a month for two one-to-one lessons a week, $119 for three or $149 for four, all 45 minutes. You can cancel when summer ends, with no contract.

Can my child do summer math and reading?

Yes. We also run a summer reading program. Lessons can be split between math and reading if that suits your child.

Is online summer tutoring better than a math camp?

Camps offer group activities and social time. One-to-one tutoring targets your child's specific gaps and next-year needs. Some families do both: a camp for fun and two short lessons a week for skills.
