How it works, in short

Kindergarten reading tutoring at TaleemSquare is a live, one-to-one online lesson that lays the foundations for reading: hearing the sounds in words, matching each letter to its sound, blending sounds into short words like sat and pin, learning first sight words, and enjoying simple books together.

Kindergarten is when children start to crack the reading code, so a little extra help now goes a long way. Lessons are short, playful activities. Plans start at $85 a month after a free assessment.

What changes after a term of lessons

Stack of books and a notebook
Reading lessons mix reading aloud, talking about the text and short written answers.

Knows letter sounds

Says the sound for every letter quickly, not just the letter name.

Blends simple words

Blends sounds like s-a-t into sat and reads short words on their own.

Loves story time

Enjoys looking at books, retells a simple story and asks for more.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Hearing sounds in words

Rhyming, clapping syllables and picking out the first, middle and last sound in short words.

Letter sounds

The main sound of each consonant, short and long vowel sounds, and matching each sound to its letter.

Blending and segmenting

Pushing sounds together to read words like hop and sun, and pulling them apart to spell them.

First sight words

Common words such as the, is, you and my, practised until your child reads them at once.

Concepts of print

Holding a book, reading left to right and top to bottom, and knowing that spaces separate words.

Early books

Reading simple decodable books aloud and talking about the pictures and the story.

Signs your child could use help

  • Knows letter names but not the sounds they make
  • Finds rhyming words hard to hear
  • Cannot yet blend sounds into a short word
  • Avoids books or gets upset at reading time
  • Forgets sight words from one week to the next
  • Teacher has flagged reading as a concern

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

Common Core ELA Kindergarten (or your state's standards)

Kindergarten foundational skills cover concepts of print, rhyming and syllables, hearing individual sounds in short words, one sound for each consonant, short and long vowel sounds, common sight words, and reading early books with understanding.

National Curriculum English, Year 1 (Key Stage 1)

Year 1 teaches systematic phonics, reading common exception words and reading aloud books matched to a child's phonics. Children take the phonics screening check in June of Year 1.

Level: Year 1

Ontario Kindergarten Program (other provinces similar)

Ontario's Kindergarten Program builds early reading through play and shared books, including rhyming, knowing most letters of the alphabet and using letter sounds to make sense of print. We follow your province's program.

Australian Curriculum: English, Foundation

Foundation covers concepts of print, rhyming and syllables, blending and segmenting sounds, linking letters and sounds, and reading decodable texts. Several states run a Phonics Check in Year 1.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare reading and English tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How we teach kindergarten readers

Sounds before letters

Children play with the sounds in spoken words first, then link each sound to the letter that spells it.

One step at a time

Letter sounds are introduced in a set order, and every lesson reviews earlier ones so nothing slips away.

Books they can read

Your child reads tiny books built from the sounds they know, so early success comes quickly.

Play and movement

Puppets, songs and quick games keep a five-year-old smiling through the lesson.

Mother and daughter using a laptop together
Lessons run live on Zoom from home, with a parent welcome to sit in.
Boy writing in his notebook
Short written answers build the habit of using evidence.

After each class you get a WhatsApp note: what was read, what clicked, and one thing to practise at home.

Common worries, honest answers

“Is my five-year-old ready for reading lessons?”

If your child is in kindergarten, they are already working on these skills at school. Lessons start from what your child knows today, and the tutor keeps the pace gentle so reading stays fun.

“My child knows the alphabet song. Isn't that enough?”

Singing the alphabet shows a good memory for letter names, but reading depends on knowing the sound each letter makes and blending sounds together. The free assessment checks these skills one by one.

“What if the school uses a different phonics program?”

Share the program name and the sounds your child has covered. The tutor can follow the same order and words, so home lessons back up what happens in class.

Frequently asked questions

What reading skills should a kindergartener have by the end of the year?

By the end of kindergarten, most children know the main sound for each letter, can hear and make rhymes, blend sounds to read simple words like cat and sit, read a small set of common sight words, and follow along in an early reader. Ask your child's teacher which reading level or benchmark the school uses.

How can I help my kindergartener learn to read at home?

Read aloud every day and point to the words as you go. Play I spy with sounds, make up silly rhymes, and practise a few letter sounds at a time. When your child reads to you, help them sound out each word instead of guessing from the picture.

Is it normal for a kindergartener not to read yet?

Yes. Many children start kindergarten without reading and learn during the year. What matters is steady progress with letter sounds and blending. If your child is not making progress by the middle of the year, it is worth a closer look.

How much does a kindergarten reading tutor cost?

TaleemSquare's one-to-one kindergarten reading tutoring starts at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, about $10.63 a lesson. Three lessons a week cost $119 and four cost $149, with no contract, no registration fee and a free first assessment.

What is the difference between phonics and sight words?

Phonics teaches the link between sounds and letters, so a child can sound out new words. Sight words are common words a child learns to recognise instantly. Children need both, and phonics does most of the work.

Do you also offer kindergarten math?

Yes. Our kindergarten math tutoring covers counting, numbers to 20 and early adding and taking away. Some families split their weekly lessons between reading and math.
