What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Solid on grade-level standards

Fills gaps in the skills the state test checks, from fractions and ratios to expressions and equations.

Clear written solutions

Shows each step on constructed-response questions, so correct reasoning earns credit even when an answer slips.

Ready for the Algebra I Regents

Builds equation, function and graphing skills, with graphing calculator practice for the Regents exam.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Place value, fractions, decimals and operations, matched to your child's grade.

Ratios and proportional relationships

Rates, percents and proportional reasoning, central to the grades 6 and 7 tests.

Writing and solving equations and inequalities, building toward the algebra in grade 8.

Geometry and measurement

Area, volume, angles and transformations, taught with drawings and real examples.

Statistics and probability

Data displays, measures of center and probability for the middle school grades.

Constructed-response practice

Writing complete solutions that show each step, so your child earns credit for correct reasoning.

Algebra I Regents skills

Linear, quadratic and exponential functions, systems of equations and statistics, with graphing calculator practice.

Signs your child could use help

  • Scored Level 1 or 2 on last year's state math test
  • Loses points on constructed-response questions
  • Struggles with fractions, ratios or equations in class
  • Finds the computer-based format distracting
  • Is taking Algebra I and needs a 65 on the Regents
  • Wants to reach Level 3 or Level 4

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

NYS Grades 3-8 Mathematics Tests and Regents (NYSED)

The 2027 grades 3-8 tests run April 5 to May 14, and each school picks two consecutive days. They are computer-based and untimed, in two sessions. The Algebra I Regents is offered in January, June and August 2027, and a 65 counts toward a Regents diploma.

For families moving from the UK

The grades 3-8 tests cover roughly the span of Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 maths. We check your child's gaps against the New York standards rather than the UK curriculum, then practice the test format.

Level: Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 maths

For families moving from Canada

Provincial courses cover similar topics, but the New York tests follow the state's own standards and include constructed-response questions. We map what your child learned and practice the format.

For families moving from Australia

NAPLAN numeracy tests Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. New York tests every grade from 3 to 8, so we fill gaps against the New York standards and practice written, constructed-response answers.

Common worries, honest answers

“Do these tests decide whether my child moves up a grade?”

New York law says promotion or placement cannot be based solely or primarily on these tests. They still show what your child knows, so they are a useful guide to what to work on.

“My child freezes on written questions. Can you help?”

Yes. We practice a simple routine for constructed-response questions: restate the question, show each step, and check the answer, until it becomes automatic.

“Can you help with the Algebra I Regents in middle school?”

Yes. Some New York students take Algebra I in grade 8. The tutor follows your child's course and prepares them for the Regents exam.

Frequently asked questions

When is the 2027 New York State math test?

NYSED's 2026-27 testing schedule lists the grades 3-8 math tests between April 5 and May 14, 2027. Each school chooses two consecutive days in that window, so ask your school for its exact dates.

Is the New York State math test timed?

No. NYSED's latest test guide describes two untimed sessions: the first is multiple choice, and the second has multiple-choice and constructed-response questions. From spring 2026 the grades 3-8 tests are computer-based for all students.

Can students use a calculator on the state math test?

Not in grades 3-5. In grade 6, Session 1 has no calculator and Session 2 allows a four-function calculator with a square root key or a scientific calculator. Grades 7 and 8 use a scientific calculator, and the Algebra I Regents requires a graphing calculator.

What score is proficient on the New York State math test?

Results are reported as Levels 1 to 4. Level 3 means proficient, and it starts at a scale score of 450 in every grade. Level 4 means the student excels in that grade's standards.

When is the Algebra I Regents in 2027?

NYSED lists Regents exam periods of January 26-29, June 15-25 and August 17-18, 2027. The exam is three hours with a graphing calculator, and a score of 65 or higher currently counts toward a Regents diploma.
