How it works, in short

TaleemSquare STAAR math tutoring is live, one-to-one online help for Texas students preparing for the grades 3-8 math tests or the Algebra I end-of-course exam. A tutor works on the TEKS skills your child finds hardest, practices the online item types such as multiselect, drag and drop and equation editor, and builds stamina for a test most students finish in about three hours.

Texas has passed a law replacing STAAR, and TEA says spring 2027 is the last STAAR for grades 3-8, so this year's test still counts. The last STAAR end-of-course administration is December 2027. Plans start at $85 a month, with no contract.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Solid on the tested TEKS

Fills gaps in the grade-level skills STAAR checks, from fractions and place value to proportional reasoning and linear equations.

Comfortable with the online format

Has practiced each item type, including multiselect, hot spot, drag and drop and equation editor, so the screen holds no surprises.

Steady pacing and fewer slips

Works through realistic practice sets and checks answers, a habit that matters on a long test.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Number and operations

Place value, fractions, decimals and operations with rational numbers, matched to your child's grade-level TEKS.

Proportional reasoning

Ratios, rates, percents and proportional relationships, a big part of the grades 6-8 tests.

Algebraic reasoning

Expressions, equations and inequalities, from patterns in the early grades to multi-step equations in grade 8.

Geometry and measurement

Area, volume, angles and the coordinate plane, and how to use the STAAR reference materials where they are provided.

Data and personal finance

Reading graphs, simple statistics and the personal financial literacy questions that come from the Texas standards.

Algebra I end-of-course skills

Linear and quadratic functions, systems of equations and graphing with a calculator, for the Algebra I EOC.

STAAR question types

Practice with multiselect, multipart, hot text, hot spot, drag and drop, equation editor and constructed-response items.

Signs your child could use help

  • Scored Approaches or Did Not Meet on last year's STAAR
  • Struggles with fractions, ratios or equations in class
  • Gets stuck on multiselect or equation-editor questions
  • Runs out of steam on long tests
  • Is taking Algebra I and needs to pass the EOC
  • Needs more help than the school's test review offers

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

STAAR Mathematics (Texas Education Agency)

Grades 3-8 math is given online April 19-30, 2027, and Algebra I has windows in December 2026, April 2027 and June 2027. Results are Masters, Meets, Approaches or Did Not Meet Grade Level, and the Algebra I EOC generally has to be passed to graduate.

For families moving from the UK

STAAR grades 3-8 cover roughly the span of Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 maths. We check your child's gaps against the Texas standards (TEKS) rather than the UK curriculum, then practice the STAAR format.

Level: Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 maths

For families moving from Canada

Provincial math courses cover similar topics, but STAAR follows the Texas standards and its own online question types. We map what your child learned to the TEKS and practice the format.

Level: Grades 3-9 math

For families moving from Australia

NAPLAN numeracy tests Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. STAAR tests every grade from 3 to 8 plus Algebra I, so we fill any gaps against the Texas standards and practice the STAAR format.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How STAAR math lessons work

Start with a skills check

The first lesson pinpoints which grade-level TEKS your child has secure and which need work, using STAAR-style questions.

Teach, then practice the format

Each skill is taught step by step, then practiced in the same item types your child will see online.

Build toward test conditions

Short timed sets grow into longer mixed practice as April gets closer, so stamina builds without stress.

Updates for parents

You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

Common worries, honest answers

“Is STAAR still worth preparing for if it is being replaced?”

Yes. TEA says spring 2027 is the last STAAR for grades 3-8, so this year's results still count, and the math skills carry straight into whatever test comes next.

“My child gets anxious about tests. Will this make it worse?”

We keep early practice calm and short, and build confidence by showing progress. Knowing the format well usually makes test day feel familiar instead of scary.

“Can you help with Algebra I if my child is in middle school?”

Yes. Many Texas students take Algebra I in grade 8 or earlier. The tutor follows your child's course and prepares them for the end-of-course exam.

Frequently asked questions

When is the STAAR math test in 2027?

TEA's 2026-2027 testing calendar lists grades 3-8 math and Algebra I for April 19-30, 2027. Algebra I also has windows from November 30 to December 11, 2026 and from June 14 to 25, 2027. Your school sets the exact day within each window.

Is STAAR being replaced?

Yes. Under House Bill 8, passed in 2025, Texas replaces STAAR beginning with the 2027-2028 school year with shorter beginning-, middle- and end-of-year tests for grades 3-8. TEA says the last STAAR is spring 2027 for grades 3-8 and December 2027 for end-of-course exams.

Can students use a calculator on STAAR math?

Not in grades 3-7, unless a student qualifies for an accommodation. In grade 8 and Algebra I a calculator with graphing capability is required, and the tools are built into the online testing platform. We practice with the same kind of tools.

What do the STAAR performance levels mean?

Scores are reported as Masters Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, Approaches Grade Level or Did Not Meet Grade Level, along with a scale score. The first three count as passing, and many families aim for Meets or Masters rather than just Approaches.

How long is the STAAR math test?

TEA says most students finish in about three hours. Sessions are usually scheduled for three to four hours, and students may keep working until the end of the school day, so building stamina is part of our practice.

How much does STAAR math tutoring cost?

Plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, with no contract. You can start with a free assessment, where the tutor checks your child's level against the TEKS and suggests a plan.
