How it works, in short

TaleemSquare AASA math tutoring is live, one-to-one online help for Arizona students in grades 3 to 8 preparing for Arizona's Academic Standards Assessment in math. A tutor works on the Arizona math standards your child finds hardest and practices the computer-based format, which has two untimed units.

The spring 2027 computer-based math window is April 12 to May 7, 2027. Calculators are not allowed in grades 3 to 6, and grades 7 and 8 use a scientific calculator on Unit 1 only. Plans start at $85 a month, with no contract.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Solid on the tested standards

Fills gaps in the grade-level Arizona math skills AASA checks, from fractions and place value to ratios and linear equations.

Strong without a calculator

Keeps arithmetic quick and accurate, since grades 3 to 6 test without one and Unit 2 is calculator-free in grades 7 and 8.

Steady focus

Builds the stamina for two untimed units, reading carefully and checking work instead of rushing to finish.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Number and operations

Place value, multi-digit arithmetic and operations with decimals and rational numbers, matched to your child's grade.

Fractions

Fraction equivalence, comparing fractions and operations with fractions, a major focus of the grades 3 to 5 standards.

Ratios and proportional reasoning

Ratios, rates, percents and proportional relationships, central to the grades 6 and 7 tests.

Expressions and equations

Writing and solving equations and inequalities, through linear equations and systems in grade 8.

Geometry and measurement

Area, volume, angles, the coordinate plane and transformations, matched to the Arizona grade-level standards.

Statistics and probability

Data displays, measures of center and simple probability, as taught in middle school.

Calculator rules by grade

No calculator in grades 3 to 6, and a scientific calculator on Unit 1 only in grades 7 and 8, so we practice both ways.

Signs your child could use help

  • Scored Minimally or Partially Proficient on the last AASA math test
  • Struggles with fractions, ratios or equations in class
  • Relies on a calculator for basic arithmetic
  • Rushes through long tests and makes careless errors
  • Is moving into an accelerated or honors math class
  • Needs more help than the school's test review offers

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

AASA Mathematics (Arizona Department of Education)

Grades 3 to 8 take the math test each spring, online from April 12 to May 7, 2027 or on paper from April 12 to 23. Results use four levels, and Proficient or Highly Proficient means likely ready for the next grade. Grade 9 takes ACT Aspire and grade 11 the ACT.

For families moving from the UK

AASA in grades 3 to 8 covers roughly Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 maths. We check your child's gaps against the Arizona standards rather than the UK curriculum, then practice the AASA format.

Level: Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 maths

For families moving from Canada

Provincial math covers similar topics, but AASA follows Arizona's own math standards and calculator rules. We map what your child learned to those standards and practice the format.

Level: Grades 3-8 math

For families moving from Australia

NAPLAN numeracy tests Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. AASA tests every grade from 3 to 8, so we fill gaps against the Arizona standards and practice the format.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How AASA math lessons work

Start with a skills check

The first lesson finds which grade-level standards your child has secure and which need work, using test-style questions.

Teach, then practice the format

Each skill is taught step by step, then practiced in AASA-style items, with or without a calculator as the grade requires.

Build toward test conditions

Short practice sets grow into full untimed practice units as April gets closer.

Updates for parents

You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

Common worries, honest answers

“My child relies on a calculator. Is that a problem for AASA?”

It can be. Calculators are not allowed in grades 3 to 6, and grades 7 and 8 use one only on Unit 1. We build quick, accurate arithmetic so the calculator-free parts do not cost easy points.

“My child gets anxious about tests. Will this make it worse?”

We keep early practice calm and short, and build confidence by showing progress. Knowing the format well usually makes test day feel familiar instead of scary.

“When will we see the results?”

Schools, not the state, give families AASA results. For spring 2026, reports reached schools in late May, and families could view them in the Parent Portal from June 10 with a claim code. Ask your school how it shares results.

Frequently asked questions

When is the AASA math test in 2027?

The Arizona Department of Education lists the spring 2027 computer-based AASA math window as April 12 to May 7, 2027, and the paper window as April 12 to 23, 2027. Your school sets the exact days inside the window.

Can students use a calculator on AASA math?

Not in grades 3 to 6. In grades 7 and 8, students may use a scientific calculator on Unit 1 only, and Unit 2 is calculator-free. We practice both ways so your child is comfortable with each unit.

What do the AASA performance levels mean?

Results use four levels: Minimally Proficient, Partially Proficient, Proficient and Highly Proficient. The state's family report guide explains that students at Proficient or Highly Proficient are likely ready for the next grade's work.

Is the AASA math test timed?

No. The computer-based math test has two units, and neither is timed. Most students still benefit from pacing practice, so they stay focused and check their work through both units.

What math tests do Arizona high school students take?

Grade 9 students take ACT Aspire, given online from March 22 to April 16, 2027. Grade 11 students take the ACT with Writing, with test windows of March 23 to April 2 and April 6 to 16, 2027.

How much does AASA math tutoring cost?

Plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, with no contract. You can start with a free assessment, where the tutor checks your child's level against the Arizona standards and suggests a plan.
