How Much Does a Math Tutor Cost in the US? (2026)
Hourly rates from marketplaces and tutoring companies, what learning centers charge per month, the fees that don't show in the hourly rate, and the free help worth trying first.
Short answer
Private math tutors in the US usually cost about $25-$60 an hour in 2026. Wyzant's marketplace average for math tutors is about $33-$55 an hour, and on Care.com the average posted starting rate was about $24 for K-12 tutors and about $100 for test prep tutors (September 2025). Centers price differently: Sylvan says its tutoring typically averages $50-$55 an hour, Kumon costs about $150-$200 per subject a month and Mathnasium about $250-$550 a month. At one hour a week, private tutoring typically comes to about $110-$260 a month. TaleemSquare's online one-to-one plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week (about $10.63 a lesson).
When American parents ask what math tutoring costs, they are usually comparing four different things: a private tutor paid by the hour, a tutoring company sold as a monthly plan, a learning center like Kumon or Mathnasium paid by the month, and free help from school, libraries and apps. They are priced differently because they are different products.
Below are typical 2026 prices for each, what a month really costs, what moves the price, the fees that don't show up in the hourly rate, and the free help worth trying first.

What a month of tutoring actually costs
At one one-hour lesson a week (about 4.3 lessons a month):
- $25 an hour is roughly $110 a month.
- $45 an hour is roughly $195 a month.
- $60 an hour is roughly $260 a month.
- $100 an hour for test prep is roughly $430 a month.
Over a school year of about 36 weeks, weekly tutoring at $45 an hour comes to about $1,620, and twice a week doubles it. That is why it is worth being specific about what the tutoring is meant to fix before you start.
What pushes the price up or down
Grade and course
Elementary math is cheapest. Algebra 2, precalculus, AP Calculus and SAT or ACT math cost more because fewer tutors teach them well, and test prep specialists charge the most.
Who the tutor is
College students usually charge least; certified teachers and specialist tutors charge most. For younger children, the ability to find and fix an old gap matters more than credentials.
Center, company or one-to-one
Centers like Mathnasium and Kumon charge by the month and split an instructor's attention across several students. Tutoring companies sell monthly plans of hours. A private one-to-one tutor costs more per hour of attention but can move faster on a specific problem.
City and format
In-person rates are highest in large, high-cost metro areas. Online, your ZIP code stops mattering, and there is no drive to a center twice a week.
Costs that don't appear in the hourly rate
- Registration and enrollment fees. Kumon centers are reported to charge about $50-$80, and one Mathnasium center lists a $199 enrollment fee.
- Platform and service fees. Wyzant adds a 9% service fee on top of the tutor's rate, and some online programs charge a platform fee on shorter plans.
- Minimum commitments. Some providers sell only 6- or 12-month plans, or monthly hours that don't roll over if you miss a week.
- Cancellation windows. 24 hours is common; a lesson canceled later is usually charged in full.
- Materials. Worksheet programs often charge a materials fee in the first month.
Ask every provider for the total cost of the first three months, including all fees. It is the fastest way to compare offers that are priced differently.
Free help worth using first
- Your child's teacher. Ask which specific topics are weakest and whether the school runs math intervention or extra help sessions.
- Khan Academy. Free lessons and practice from Kindergarten math through calculus. Its AI tutor, Khanmigo, costs $4 a month for parents.
- Your public library. Some libraries give card holders free access to online homework help and tutoring. Ask at the desk or check the library's website.
