How it works, in short

TaleemSquare IAR math tutoring is live, one-to-one online help for Illinois students in grades 3 to 8 preparing for the Illinois Assessment of Readiness. A tutor works on the math standards your child finds hardest and practices the test's three 60-minute sections, including the parts where no calculator is allowed.

Since 2025 Illinois reports results as Below, Approaching, Proficient or Above Proficient. The spring 2027 online window is March 1 to April 16, 2027, and grade 11 now takes the ACT. Plans start at $85 a month, with no contract.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Solid on the tested standards

Fills gaps in the grade-level skills the IAR checks, from fractions and place value to ratios and linear equations.

Comfortable without a calculator

Keeps arithmetic sharp for the parts where calculators are not allowed, and uses the allowed calculator well when it is.

Steady pacing

Practices in 60-minute blocks that match the three test sections, so focus lasts to the final question.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Number and operations

Place value, multi-digit arithmetic and operations with decimals and rational numbers, matched to your child's grade.

Fractions

Fraction equivalence, comparing fractions and operations with fractions, a major focus of the grades 3 to 5 standards.

Ratios and proportional reasoning

Ratios, rates, percents and proportional relationships, central to the grades 6 and 7 tests.

Expressions and equations

Writing and solving equations and inequalities, through linear equations and systems in grade 8.

Geometry and measurement

Area, volume, angles, the coordinate plane and transformations, matched to the grade-level standards.

Statistics and probability

Data displays, measures of center and simple probability, as taught in middle school.

Calculator rules by grade

No calculator in grades 3 to 5, a four-function calculator in grades 6 and 7 and a scientific one in grade 8, plus a non-calculator part.

Signs your child could use help

  • Scored Below or Approaching Proficient on the last IAR
  • Struggles with fractions, ratios or equations in class
  • Relies on a calculator for basic arithmetic
  • Loses focus during long test sections
  • Is moving into accelerated or advanced math
  • Needs more help than the school's test review offers

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

Illinois Assessment of Readiness (Illinois State Board of Education)

Grades 3-8 math is given online from March 1 to April 16, 2027, or on paper by April 2. On the 650 to 850 scale, Proficient starts at 732 in grade 3 and 745 in grade 8. Grade 11 students take the ACT.

For families moving from the UK

The IAR in grades 3 to 8 covers roughly Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 maths. We check your child's gaps against the Illinois standards rather than the UK curriculum, then practice the IAR format.

Level: Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 maths

For families moving from Canada

Provincial math covers similar topics, but the IAR follows the Illinois Learning Standards and its own question formats. We map what your child learned to those standards and practice the format.

For families moving from Australia

NAPLAN numeracy tests Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The IAR tests every grade from 3 to 8, so we fill gaps against the Illinois standards and practice the format.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How IAR math lessons work

Start with a skills check

The first lesson finds which grade-level standards your child has secure and which need work, using test-style questions.

Teach, then practice the format

Each skill is taught step by step, then practiced in IAR-style items, with and without a calculator.

Build toward test conditions

Short timed sets grow into 60-minute practice blocks as March gets closer.

Updates for parents

You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

Common worries, honest answers

“Does the IAR affect promotion or graduation?”

Illinois graduation does not depend on state test scores. The report shows how your child is doing against the standards and, from grade 4, their growth from last year, which is useful for planning support.

“My child gets anxious about tests. Will this make it worse?”

We keep early practice calm and short, and build confidence by showing progress. Knowing the format well usually makes test day feel familiar instead of scary.

“My child is strong in math. Is tutoring still useful?”

Yes. Lessons can move ahead into next year's standards and harder problems while keeping the test format familiar, which helps students aiming for Above Proficient.

Frequently asked questions

When is the IAR math test in 2027?

The Illinois State Board of Education lists the spring 2027 IAR window as March 1 to April 16, 2027 for online testing and March 1 to April 2, 2027 for paper. Your school sets the exact days.

Is the IAR being replaced?

Not for 2026-27. The IAR is still Illinois's grades 3 to 8 math and English test. What changed in 2025 were the performance levels, now Below Proficient, Approaching Proficient, Proficient and Above Proficient.

Can students use a calculator on the IAR?

Not in grades 3 to 5, unless as an accommodation. Grades 6 and 7 use a four-function calculator with square root and percent, and grade 8 a scientific calculator. Part of the test is non-calculator, so we practice both ways.

What IAR score counts as proficient?

On the 650 to 850 scale, Proficient starts at 732 in grade 3, 740 in grades 4 and 5, 742 in grade 6 and 745 in grades 7 and 8. Proficient and Above Proficient both mean your child is on track for the next grade.

What math test do Illinois high school students take?

Since spring 2025, Illinois juniors take the ACT with Science and Writing, and grades 9 and 10 take PreACT. The spring 2027 ACT test events run from March 23 to April 30, 2027.

How much does IAR math tutoring cost?

Plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, with no contract. You can start with a free assessment, where the tutor checks your child's level against the Illinois standards and suggests a plan.
