How it works, in short

TaleemSquare M-STEP math tutoring is live, one-to-one online help for Michigan students in grades 3 to 7 preparing for the M-STEP math test, and for older students facing the PSAT 8/9, PSAT 10 or SAT. A tutor works on the Michigan math standards your child finds hardest and practices the untimed, computer-adaptive format.

The spring 2027 online M-STEP window is April 5 to May 14, 2027. Grade 8 math is measured by the PSAT 8/9, and grade 11 takes the SAT, without the essay from spring 2027. Plans start at $85 a month, with no contract.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Solid on the tested standards

Fills gaps in the grade-level skills M-STEP checks, from fractions and place value to ratios, expressions and equations.

Calm with an adaptive test

Knows that questions adjust to each answer, so it reads carefully, checks each step and does not rush an untimed test.

Ready for the PSAT and SAT

Builds the algebra and problem-solving skills behind the PSAT 8/9 in grades 8 and 9 and the SAT in grade 11.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Number and operations

Place value, multi-digit arithmetic and operations with decimals and rational numbers, matched to your child's grade in the Michigan standards.

Fractions

Fraction equivalence, comparing fractions and operations with fractions, a major focus of the grades 3 to 5 standards.

Ratios and proportional reasoning

Ratios, rates, percents and proportional relationships, central to the grades 6 and 7 tests.

Expressions and equations

Writing and solving expressions, equations and inequalities, building toward the algebra on the PSAT 8/9 in grade 8.

Problem solving and reasoning

Multi-step word problems, modeling and explaining answers, which the M-STEP blueprint tests alongside concepts and procedures.

Geometry, measurement and data

Area, volume, angles, the coordinate plane and data displays, matched to the grade-level standards.

Calculator rules by grade

No calculator in grades 3 to 5, a basic calculator in grade 6 and a scientific one in grade 7, on designated items only.

Signs your child could use help

  • Scored Not Proficient or Partially Proficient on the last M-STEP math test
  • Struggles with fractions, ratios or equations in class
  • Rushes through untimed tests and makes careless errors
  • Is in grade 8 and preparing for the PSAT 8/9
  • Has the SAT coming up in grade 11
  • Needs more help than the school's test review offers

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

M-STEP Mathematics (Michigan Department of Education)

Grades 3 to 7 take M-STEP math online from April 5 to May 14, 2027, or on paper from April 5 to 30. In 2026, Proficient started at 1300 in grade 3 and 1700 in grade 7. Grades 8 and 9 take the PSAT 8/9, grade 10 the PSAT 10 and grade 11 the SAT.

For families moving from the UK

M-STEP in grades 3 to 7 covers roughly Key Stage 2 and early Key Stage 3 maths. We check your child's gaps against the Michigan standards rather than the UK curriculum, then practice the adaptive format.

Level: Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 maths

For families moving from Canada

Provincial math covers similar topics, but M-STEP follows Michigan's math standards and its own adaptive format. We map what your child learned to those standards and practice the format.

Level: Grades 3-11 math

For families moving from Australia

NAPLAN numeracy tests Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. M-STEP tests every grade from 3 to 7, then the PSAT and SAT take over, so we fill gaps against the Michigan standards and practice each format.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How M-STEP math lessons work

Start with a skills check

The first lesson finds which grade-level standards your child has secure and which need work, using test-style questions.

Teach, then practice the format

Each skill is taught step by step, then practiced in adaptive-style items, with the calculator rules for your child's grade.

Build toward test day

Short practice sets grow into full untimed sessions as April gets closer.

Updates for parents

You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

Common worries, honest answers

“My child is in grade 8. Why is there no M-STEP math test?”

In Michigan, grade 8 takes the PSAT 8/9 for math instead of M-STEP, and it provides the grade 8 math score for the state. It is an online multistage adaptive test, so we practice its format while closing gaps in grade 8 math.

“My child gets anxious about tests. Will this make it worse?”

We keep early practice calm and short, and build confidence by showing progress. Knowing the format well usually makes test day feel familiar instead of scary.

“When will we see the results?”

Preliminary reports for online M-STEP tests reach schools within 48 hours of testing, and final reports are due in August 2027. Ask your school how it shares results with families.

Frequently asked questions

When is the M-STEP math test in 2027?

The Michigan Department of Education lists the spring 2027 M-STEP online window as April 5 to May 14, 2027, and the paper window as April 5 to 30, 2027. Your school sets the exact days inside the window.

Which grades take M-STEP math?

Grades 3 to 7 take M-STEP math. Grades 8 and 9 take the PSAT 8/9, grade 10 the PSAT 10 and grade 11 the SAT. In 2026 those College Board tests ran from April 6 to 30, 2026, and 2027 dates are not posted yet.

Is M-STEP math timed?

No. The online math test is computer adaptive, given in one session and untimed. Michigan's planning estimate is about 90 minutes in grades 3 to 5 and two hours in grades 6 and 7, but students work at their own pace.

Can students use a calculator on M-STEP math?

Not in grades 3 to 5. Grade 6 uses a basic calculator and grade 7 a scientific calculator, and online the built-in calculator appears only on designated items. We practice both with and without one.

What M-STEP math score is proficient?

Results use four levels: Not Proficient, Partially Proficient, Proficient and Advanced. In 2026, Proficient started at 1300 in grade 3, 1400 in grade 4, 1500 in grade 5, 1600 in grade 6 and 1700 in grade 7.

How much does M-STEP math tutoring cost?

Plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, with no contract. You can start with a free assessment, where the tutor checks your child's level against the Michigan standards and suggests a plan.
