Keystone Algebra I and Act 158 graduation pathways in Philadelphia

  • Pennsylvania students take the PSSA math test every year in grades 3 to 8, and the Keystone Exams are end-of-course tests in Algebra I, Literature, and Biology. The School District of Philadelphia's Goals and Guardrails aim to raise the share of grade 3 to 8 students proficient on the state math test from 20.7% in August 2023 to 52.0% by August 2030.
  • Under Act 158, starting with the class of 2023, students must meet one of five graduation pathways. Pathway 1 requires Proficient or Advanced (1500 or better) on all three Keystone exams, including Algebra I, and Pathway 2 requires a composite score of at least 4452 with no Below Basic scores. A district research review found that 83% of its spring 2023 seniors graduated through one or more of the five pathways.
  • In the 2023-24 school year the district adopted Illustrative Math as its district-wide K-12 math curriculum. Its Office of Research and Evaluation is running a three-year study of how the curriculum is being implemented.

A one-to-one online tutor can review the Illustrative Math lessons your child sees in class, practice PSSA-style problems in grades 3 to 8, and work through the Algebra I skills covered on the Keystone exam.
