Algebra I, higher SOL scores and Maggie Walker admission

  • Virginia's Standard Diploma requires 3 math credits and the Advanced Studies Diploma requires 4. Each also needs 1 verified math credit, earned by passing a course and its end-of-course SOL test or another approved test.
  • Virginia is raising the scores needed to reach proficient on SOL tests, in line with national NAEP benchmarks. Higher math cut scores apply in all grades from 2026-27. Until the end of 2028-29, a temporary Approaching level still counts as passing.
  • Maggie L. Walker Governor's School accepts applications only from students in their eighth-grade year. Participating divisions include Richmond, Henrico and Chesterfield. Applicants must be taking Algebra I or higher for high school credit, and must complete Algebra I before enrolling.

A tutor can prepare your child for Algebra I in middle school, which Maggie Walker applicants need for high school credit. Tutoring can then support Geometry and Algebra II, with end-of-course SOL practice as the higher cut scores phase in.

Can you help my child prepare for Standards of Learning (SOL) math tests?
