How it works, in short
TaleemSquare MCAP math tutoring is live, one-to-one online help for Maryland students preparing for the state math test in grades 3 to 8 or the MCAP Algebra I, Geometry or Algebra II test in high school. A tutor works on the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards your child finds hardest and practices the test format.
From spring 2027, the new MSTAR test replaces MCAP for grades 3 to 8 math, in a March 29 to May 28, 2027 window. MCAP high school tests, including Algebra I, do not change in 2026-27. Plans start at $85 a month, with no contract.

What changes after a term of lessons

Solid on the tested standards
Fills gaps in the grade-level skills the state test checks, from fractions and place value to ratios, equations and functions.
Ready for the new MSTAR format
Practices adaptive-style questions and the reasoning and modeling tasks MSTAR reports on, so the new test feels familiar in spring 2027.
Prepared for Algebra I
Builds the equations, functions and data skills the MCAP Algebra I test checks after most of the course is taught.
What we cover
Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.
Numbers and operation sense
Place value, fractions, decimals and operations with rational numbers, one of the four content domains in the MSTAR math blueprint.
Algebraic thinking
Patterns, expressions, equations and inequalities, from the early grades through linear equations in grade 8.
Geometric reasoning and measurement
Area, volume, angles, the coordinate plane and transformations, matched to your child's grade.
Data and statistics
Reading data displays, measures of center and probability, as covered in the Maryland standards.
Reasoning
Explaining and justifying answers, which makes up 22 to 24 percent of the MSTAR math blueprint.
Modeling
Using math to solve real-world problems, another 22 to 24 percent of the MSTAR math blueprint.
MCAP Algebra I
Equations, functions and data skills from the Algebra I course, practiced in the MCAP format with released state questions.
Signs your child could use help
- Scored Level 1 or Level 2 on the last MCAP math test
- Struggles with fractions, ratios or equations in class
- Will take the new MSTAR test for the first time in spring 2027
- Is taking Algebra I, Geometry or Algebra II this year
- Knows the math but struggles to explain the reasoning
- Needs more help than the school's test review offers
One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.
Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live
MSTAR and MCAP Mathematics (Maryland State Department of Education)
In spring 2027, grades 3 to 8 take the new MSTAR math test in a March 29 to May 28, 2027 window. High school students take the MCAP Algebra I, Geometry or Algebra II test after most of the course. On MCAP, Levels 3 and 4 count as proficient.
For families moving from the UK
The state test in grades 3 to 8 covers roughly Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 maths. We check your child's gaps against the Maryland standards rather than the UK curriculum, then practice the new MSTAR format.
Level: Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 maths
For families moving from Canada
Provincial math covers similar topics, but Maryland's test follows the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards. We map what your child learned to those standards and practice the MSTAR or MCAP format.
Level: Grades 3-11 math
For families moving from Australia
NAPLAN numeracy tests Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Maryland tests every grade from 3 to 8 plus Algebra I, so we fill gaps against the Maryland standards and practice the format.

How Maryland math test lessons work
Start with a skills check
The first lesson finds which grade-level standards your child has secure and which need work, using test-style questions.
Teach, then practice the format
Each skill is taught step by step, then practiced in adaptive-style items with written reasoning and modeling.
Build toward test day
Short practice sets grow into full sessions, using the state's free practice tests as spring gets closer.
Updates for parents
You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

“The test is changing. Is MCAP practice still useful?”
Yes. MSTAR still tests the Maryland math standards, so skills practice counts. The state describes MSTAR as shorter and adaptive, so we add adaptive-style practice and follow its blueprint: content, reasoning and modeling.
“My child gets anxious about tests. Will this make it worse?”
We keep early practice calm and short, and build confidence by showing progress. Knowing the format well usually makes test day feel familiar instead of scary.
“My child takes a high school math course in middle school. Which test applies?”
Some Maryland middle schoolers take a high school math test instead of the grade-level test. Ask your school which test your child is registered for, and we will practice that format.
