How it works, in short

TaleemSquare MCAS math tutoring is live, one-to-one online help for Massachusetts students preparing for the MCAS math tests in grades 3 to 8 and grade 10. A tutor works on the Massachusetts math standards your child finds hardest and practices the computer-based format, including the session without a calculator.

After a 2024 ballot question, MCAS no longer decides the graduation Competency Determination. Students still take the tests, and the requirement now rests on district-certified coursework, including a year each of Algebra I and Geometry, or Integrated Math I and II. Plans start at $85 a month, with no contract.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Solid on the tested standards

Fills gaps in the grade-level Massachusetts math skills MCAS checks, from fractions and place value to ratios, equations and functions.

Ready for both sessions

Practices mental math and written methods for Session 1, where no calculator is allowed, and calculator skills for Session 2 from grade 7.

Strong in course math

Builds the Algebra I and Geometry skills that grade 10 MCAS tests and that districts now certify for the Competency Determination.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Number and operations

Place value, multi-digit arithmetic and operations with decimals, matched to your child's grade in the Massachusetts framework.

Fractions

Equivalent fractions, comparing fractions and operations with fractions, a major focus of grades 3 to 5.

Ratios and proportional relationships

Ratios, rates, percents and proportional relationships, central in grades 6 and 7.

Expressions and equations

Writing and solving equations and inequalities, through linear equations and functions in grade 8.

Geometry and measurement

Area, volume, angles, the coordinate plane and transformations, and how to use the MCAS reference sheets.

Statistics and probability

Reading data displays, measures of center and probability, as covered in the middle school standards.

Grade 10 MCAS math

Algebra, functions, geometry and statistics from the high school standards, practiced with the graphing calculators allowed in Session 2.

Written answers

Showing steps and short explanations for constructed-response questions, using the online equation editor.

Signs your child could use help

  • Scored Partially Meeting or Not Meeting Expectations on MCAS math
  • Struggles with fractions, ratios or equations in class
  • Relies on a calculator and stalls without one
  • Is in grade 10, or taking Algebra I or Geometry
  • Wants strong grade 10 scores, which the Adams Scholarship still uses
  • Needs more help than the school's test review offers

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

MCAS Mathematics (Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education)

Students take MCAS math on a computer in grades 3 to 8 and grade 10, in two sessions. In spring 2026, grades 3 to 8 tested from April 27 to May 22. Results use four levels, from Not Meeting to Exceeding Expectations.

For families moving from the UK

MCAS in grades 3 to 8 covers roughly Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 maths, and grade 10 reaches into Key Stage 4. We check gaps against the Massachusetts standards rather than the UK curriculum, then practice the MCAS format.

Level: Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 maths

For families moving from Canada

Provincial math covers similar topics, but MCAS follows the Massachusetts curriculum framework and its own computer-based format. We map what your child learned to those standards and practice the format.

Level: Grades 3-10 math

For families moving from Australia

NAPLAN numeracy tests Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. MCAS tests every grade from 3 to 8 plus grade 10, so we fill gaps against the Massachusetts standards and practice the format.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How MCAS math lessons work

Start with a skills check

The first lesson finds which grade-level standards your child has secure and which need work, using test-style questions.

Teach, then practice the format

Each skill is taught step by step, then practiced in MCAS-style questions, with and without a calculator.

Build toward test conditions

Short timed sets grow into full practice sessions as the spring testing window gets closer.

Updates for parents

You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

Common worries, honest answers

“Does MCAS still matter if it is no longer a graduation test?”

Yes. State and federal law still require students to take MCAS, and results count in school accountability. The Adams Scholarship still uses MCAS scores, and districts may use high school scores in their own graduation rules.

“My child gets anxious about tests. Will this make it worse?”

We keep early practice calm and short, and build confidence by showing progress. Knowing the format well usually makes test day feel familiar instead of scary.

“What does my child need in math to graduate now?”

For the class of 2026 and later, the Competency Determination requires district-certified coursework equal to one year each of Algebra I and Geometry, or Integrated Math I and II, along with English, science and, from the class of 2027, US history. Districts can add local requirements, so check your school's policy.

Frequently asked questions

When is MCAS math in 2027?

DESE posts the 2026-27 testing schedule on its Statewide Testing Schedule page, and your school sets the exact days. For reference, in spring 2026 grades 3 to 8 math ran from April 27 to May 22, and grade 10 math ran from May 19 to 27.

What changed with the 2024 ballot question?

In November 2024, voters approved a ballot question that stops MCAS from being used to earn the Competency Determination. In May 2025 the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education updated the rules, so students now earn it through district-certified coursework. The state still gives MCAS in grades 3 to 8 and high school.

Can students use a calculator on MCAS math?

Not in grades 3 to 6. In grades 7, 8 and 10, Session 1 has no calculator and Session 2 provides one: basic and scientific in grade 7, and scientific and graphing in grades 8 and 10. We practice both ways.

What are the MCAS achievement levels?

Results use four levels: Exceeding Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Partially Meeting Expectations and Not Meeting Expectations. MCAS does not decide whether a student moves to the next grade, but the report shows which skills need work.

Are there MCAS math practice tests?

Yes. DESE links computer-based and paper practice tests, released questions and reference sheets through the MCAS Resource Center. We use released questions in lessons so the format feels familiar on test day.

How much does MCAS math tutoring cost?

Plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, with no contract. You can start with a free assessment, where the tutor checks your child's level against the Massachusetts standards and suggests a plan.
