How it works, in short

TaleemSquare NJSLA math tutoring is live, one-to-one online help for New Jersey students preparing for the NJSLA-A math test in grades 3 to 8 or the Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II tests. A tutor works on the 2023 New Jersey Student Learning Standards your child finds hardest and practices the computer-adaptive format, given in two 75-minute sessions.

Since spring 2026 the test is adaptive and uses a new score scale, so older scores do not compare directly. The spring 2027 window is April 19 to May 21, 2027. Plans start at $85 a month, with no contract.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Solid on the tested standards

Fills gaps in the grade-level skills NJSLA-A checks, from fractions and place value to ratios, linear equations and functions.

Ready for an adaptive test

Knows that questions adjust to each answer and that an earlier session cannot be reopened, so it works carefully the first time.

Steady pacing

Practices in timed blocks that match the two 75-minute sessions, so stamina and checking habits are in place by spring.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Number and operations

Place value, fractions, decimals and operations with rational numbers, matched to your child's grade in the 2023 New Jersey standards.

Ratios and proportional reasoning

Ratios, rates, percents and proportional relationships, a large share of the grades 6 and 7 tests.

Expressions and equations

Writing and solving equations and inequalities, from patterns in the early grades to linear equations in grade 8.

Geometry and measurement

Area, volume, angles, the coordinate plane and transformations, and how to use the reference sheets.

Statistics and probability

Reading data displays, measures of center and simple probability, as covered in the middle school standards.

High school end-of-course math

Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II skills for the end-of-course tests, with graphing calculator practice.

Calculator rules by grade

No calculator in grades 3 to 5, a four-function calculator from grade 6 and a scientific one in grade 8, so we practice the same way.

Signs your child could use help

  • Scored Partially Met or Approaching Expectations on the last NJSLA
  • Struggles with fractions, ratios or equations in class
  • Rushes and loses easy points on long tests
  • Is taking Algebra I, Geometry or Algebra II this year
  • Will need the NJGPA-A or a substitute score to graduate
  • Needs more help than the school's test review offers

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

NJSLA-A Mathematics (New Jersey Department of Education)

Grades 3-8 and high school math are given online from April 19 to May 21, 2027, with a fall high school block from November 30 to December 16, 2026. Results use five levels, and Met Expectations is Level 4 on the new adaptive scale.

For families moving from the UK

NJSLA-A in grades 3 to 8 covers roughly Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 maths. We check your child's gaps against the New Jersey standards rather than the UK curriculum, then practice the adaptive format.

Level: Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 maths

For families moving from Canada

Provincial math covers similar topics, but NJSLA-A follows the 2023 New Jersey Student Learning Standards and its own adaptive format. We map what your child learned to those standards and practice the format.

Level: Grades 3-11 math

For families moving from Australia

NAPLAN numeracy tests Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NJSLA-A tests every grade from 3 to 8 plus high school courses, so we fill gaps against the New Jersey standards and practice the format.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How NJSLA math lessons work

Start with a skills check

The first lesson finds which grade-level standards your child has secure and which need work, using test-style questions.

Teach, then practice the format

Each skill is taught step by step, then practiced in the item types used on the adaptive test.

Build toward test conditions

Short timed sets grow into 75-minute practice blocks as spring gets closer.

Updates for parents

You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

Common worries, honest answers

“The test changed in 2026. Is older practice still useful?”

The math standards are still the 2023 New Jersey standards, so skills practice counts. What changed is the adaptive format and the score scale, so we use fresh test-style practice and do not compare new scores with old ones.

“My child gets anxious about tests. Will this make it worse?”

We keep early practice calm and short, and build confidence by showing progress. Knowing the format well usually makes test day feel familiar instead of scary.

“Does NJSLA-A affect graduation?”

The grades 3 to 8 tests do not. In grade 11 the NJGPA-A is the graduation test, and the Class of 2027 is the first class held to it, with SAT, ACT or PSAT substitute scores also accepted.

Frequently asked questions

When is the NJSLA math test in 2027?

The New Jersey Department of Education lists the spring 2027 NJSLA-A window as April 19 to May 21, 2027 for grades 3-8 and high school math. High school math also has a fall block from November 30 to December 16, 2026. Your school sets the exact days.

What is NJSLA-A?

Starting in spring 2026, New Jersey replaced the NJSLA with the NJSLA-Adaptive, a computer-adaptive test aligned to the 2023 New Jersey Student Learning Standards. The graduation test became the NJGPA-Adaptive. Questions adjust to each student's answers.

Can students use a calculator on NJSLA-A math?

Not in grades 3 to 5. From grade 6 students have a four-function calculator, grade 8 uses a scientific calculator, and the high school end-of-course tests and NJGPA-A allow a graphing calculator. We practice with the same tools.

What score means my child met expectations?

Results are reported in five levels, from Did Not Yet Meet to Exceeded Expectations, and Met Expectations is Level 4. On the new scale adopted in September 2026, Level 4 starts at 1399 in grade 3 and 1577 in grade 8, and at 2500 for the end-of-course tests.

What does my child need to graduate in math?

For the Class of 2027, students need Graduation Ready, a score of 450 or higher, on the NJGPA-A math test. Students who do not reach it in grade 11 can use a substitute such as SAT Math 440, ACT Math 17 or PSAT Math 420, or a portfolio appeal in grade 12.

How much does NJSLA math tutoring cost?

Plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, with no contract. You can start with a free assessment, where the tutor checks your child's level against the New Jersey standards and suggests a plan.
