How it works, in short

TaleemSquare Ohio State Test math tutoring is live, one-to-one online help for Ohio students preparing for the grades 3 to 8 math tests or the high school end-of-course tests in Algebra I and Geometry. A tutor works on the Ohio math standards your child finds hardest and practices the online test format, including the calculator rules.

The spring 2027 math window is April 5 to May 14, 2027, and each school uses 15 school days inside it. To graduate, students need a competency score of 684 on Algebra I or another approved option. Plans start at $85 a month, with no contract.

What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Solid on the tested standards

Fills gaps in the grade-level Ohio math skills the tests check, from fractions and place value to ratios, equations and functions.

Ready for the Algebra I graduation score

Works toward the competency score of 684 on the Algebra I test, the math test Ohio uses for graduation.

Comfortable with the online format

Practices the item types, reference sheets and Desmos calculators used on the online tests, so test day feels familiar.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Number and operations

Place value, multi-digit arithmetic and operations with decimals, matched to your child's grade in Ohio's Learning Standards.

Fractions

Equivalent fractions, comparing fractions and operations with fractions, a major focus of grades 3 to 5.

Ratios and proportional reasoning

Ratios, rates, percents and proportional relationships, central in grades 6 and 7.

Expressions and equations

Writing and solving equations and inequalities, through linear equations and functions in grade 8.

Geometry and measurement

Area, volume, angles, the coordinate plane and transformations, and how to use the Ohio reference sheets.

Statistics and probability

Reading data displays, measures of center and simple probability, as covered in the middle school standards.

Algebra I end-of-course test

Linear and exponential functions, equations, systems and data from the Algebra I standards, working toward the competency score of 684.

Geometry end-of-course test

Congruence, similarity, right triangles, circles and coordinate geometry for the Geometry test, which every student must take.

Signs your child could use help

  • Scored Limited or Basic on the last Ohio State Test in math
  • Struggles with fractions, ratios or equations in class
  • Is taking Algebra I or Geometry this year
  • Scored below 684 on Algebra I and needs a retake
  • Rushes on the online test and loses easy points
  • Needs more help than the school's test review offers

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

Ohio's State Tests in Mathematics (Ohio Department of Education and Workforce)

Students take a math test every year in grades 3 to 8 and end-of-course tests in Algebra I and Geometry. The spring 2027 window is April 5 to May 14, 2027. Results use five levels, and Proficient starts at a scaled score of 700.

For families moving from the UK

The grades 3 to 8 tests cover roughly Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 maths, and Algebra I and Geometry reach into Key Stage 4. We check gaps against Ohio's standards rather than the UK curriculum, then practice the format.

Level: Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 maths

For families moving from Canada

Provincial math covers similar topics, but Ohio's State Tests follow Ohio's Learning Standards and their own online format. We map what your child learned to those standards and practice the format.

For families moving from Australia

NAPLAN numeracy tests Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Ohio tests every grade from 3 to 8 plus Algebra I and Geometry, so we fill gaps against Ohio's standards and practice the format.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How Ohio State Test math lessons work

Start with a skills check

The first lesson finds which grade-level standards your child has secure and which need work, using test-style questions.

Teach, then practice the format

Each skill is taught step by step, then practiced in the item types used on the online Ohio tests.

Build toward test conditions

Short timed sets grow into full practice tests as the April window gets closer.

Updates for parents

You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

Common worries, honest answers

“My child scored below 684 on Algebra I. What happens now?”

Schools must offer support and a retake at least once. After remediation and a second try, students can show competency another way: College Credit Plus, the ACT or SAT, career experience and technical skill, or military enlistment. A higher score is still the most direct route.

“My child gets anxious about tests. Will this make it worse?”

We keep early practice calm and short, and build confidence by showing progress. Knowing the format well usually makes test day feel familiar instead of scary.

“Does the Geometry test count for graduation?”

Every student must take the Geometry test, or Integrated Math II, and have a score on record by the end of the fourth year of high school. For the classes of 2023 and beyond, the score does not affect the graduation pathway, but it does count for school results.

Frequently asked questions

When are Ohio's State Tests in math in 2027?

The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce lists the spring 2027 math, science and social studies window as April 5 to May 14, 2027. Each school uses 15 consecutive school days inside it, including make-ups. High school end-of-course tests also run November 30, 2026 to January 15, 2027 and June 21 to July 9, 2027.

What are the performance levels on Ohio's State Tests?

Results use five levels: Limited, Basic, Proficient, Accomplished and Advanced. Proficient starts at a scaled score of 700 on every math test, and Accomplished starts at 725. The Basic and Advanced cut scores vary by grade and course.

Is the Algebra I graduation score the same as Proficient?

No. Ohio sets competency for graduation at 684 on the Algebra I test, or Integrated Math I, which is below the Proficient score of 700. Reaching 684 meets the math competency requirement, while Proficient or higher shows stronger mastery of the course.

Can students use a calculator on Ohio's State Tests in math?

In grades 6 and 7, items on Part B permit a calculator. On the high school Algebra I and Geometry tests, all items permit a calculator. The online tests have built-in Desmos calculators, and we practice with the same tools.

Are there practice tests for Ohio's State Tests?

Yes. Practice tests are on the Ohio state test portal, where students log in as guests, and half-length practice tests are available for each high school math test. We use them alongside lessons so the online format feels familiar.

How much does Ohio State Test math tutoring cost?

Plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, with no contract. You can start with a free assessment, where the tutor checks your child's level against Ohio's Learning Standards and suggests a plan.
