What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Solid on the tested standards

Fills gaps in the grade-level Pennsylvania math skills the PSSA checks, from place value and fractions to ratios and linear equations.

Ready for open-ended questions

Shows each step and explains answers clearly, since PSSA open-ended questions are scored on the work and reasoning shown.

On track for Keystone Algebra I

Builds the equations, functions and data skills the Keystone Algebra I exam covers, so high school students can aim for Proficient.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Number and operations

Place value, multi-digit arithmetic and operations with decimals, matched to your child's grade in the Pennsylvania standards.

Fractions

Equivalent fractions, comparing fractions and operations with fractions, a major focus of grades 3 to 5.

Ratios and proportional reasoning

Ratios, rates, percents and proportional relationships, central in grades 6 and 7.

Expressions and equations

Writing and solving equations and inequalities, through linear equations and functions in grade 8.

Geometry and measurement

Area, volume, angles, the coordinate plane and transformations, plus how to use the formula sheet.

Data and probability

Reading graphs and tables, measures of center and simple probability, as covered in the middle school standards.

Keystone Algebra I

Linear equations and inequalities, functions, systems and data analysis for the Keystone Algebra I end-of-course exam.

Open-ended answers

Writing clear steps and short explanations for open-ended questions that are scored on the work shown.

Signs your child could use help

  • Scored Basic or Below Basic on the last PSSA math test
  • Struggles with fractions, ratios or equations in class
  • Loses points on open-ended questions by skipping steps
  • Is taking Algebra I and will sit the Keystone exam
  • Needs to retake Keystone Algebra I in winter or summer
  • Needs more help than the school's test review offers

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

PSSA Mathematics and Keystone Exams (Pennsylvania Department of Education)

Every student in grades 3 to 8 takes the PSSA in math. In 2027 the math window is May 3 to 7, with optional make-ups May 10 to 14. Results use four levels: Advanced, Proficient, Basic and Below Basic. Keystone Algebra I is a high school end-of-course exam.

For families moving from the UK

The PSSA in grades 3 to 8 covers roughly Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 maths. We check your child's gaps against the Pennsylvania standards rather than the UK curriculum, then practice the PSSA format.

Level: Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 maths

For families moving from Canada

Provincial math covers similar topics, but the PSSA follows Pennsylvania's own standards and question formats, including open-ended questions. We map what your child learned to those standards and practice the format.

Level: Grades 3-9 math

For families moving from Australia

NAPLAN numeracy tests Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The PSSA tests every grade from 3 to 8, and Keystone Algebra I follows in high school, so we fill gaps against the Pennsylvania standards and practice the format.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How PSSA math lessons work

Start with a skills check

The first lesson finds which grade-level standards your child has secure and which need work, using test-style questions.

Teach, then practice the format

Each skill is taught step by step, then practiced in PSSA-style multiple-choice and open-ended questions.

Build toward test conditions

Short timed sets grow into full practice sessions as the May testing window gets closer.

Updates for parents

You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

Common worries, honest answers

“My child is in high school. Does Keystone Algebra I matter for graduation?”

It can. Since the class of 2023, students meet the statewide graduation requirement through one of five Pathways to Graduation. Reaching Proficient on the Keystone Exams is one route, and other pathways exist for students who do not. Students still take the exams for federal accountability.

“My child gets anxious about tests. Will this make it worse?”

We keep early practice calm and short, and build confidence by showing progress. Knowing the format well usually makes test day feel familiar instead of scary.

“My child missed Proficient on the PSSA last year. Is it too late?”

No. The PSSA is given every spring from grade 3 to grade 8, so each year is a fresh start. We find the skills behind the low score, fill them in order and practice the format before May.

Frequently asked questions

When is the PSSA math test in 2027?

The Pennsylvania Department of Education lists the 2027 PSSA mathematics and science window as May 3 to 7, 2027, with an optional make-up window from May 10 to 14. English Language Arts comes first, from April 26 to 30. Your school sets the exact days.

What are the PSSA performance levels?

Results use four levels: Advanced, Proficient, Basic and Below Basic. The State Board of Education approved the criteria for each level. Individual student reports go to your child's school, so ask the school for your child's report.

What is the PSSA math test like?

The test mixes multiple-choice questions, each with four answer choices, and open-ended questions where students show their work. The state's 2025 item sampler for grade 7, for example, has 16 multiple-choice questions, one open-ended question, a formula sheet and one question without a calculator.

When can my child take Keystone Algebra I?

In 2026-27 the Keystone windows are December 7 to 18, 2026 and January 4 to 15, 2027 in winter, May 17 to 28, 2027 in spring, and July 26 to 30, 2027 in summer. It is an end-of-course exam, so students take it when they finish Algebra I.

What score is Proficient on Keystone Algebra I?

Keystone scale scores run from 1200 to 1800. On Algebra I, Basic is 1439 to 1499, Proficient is 1500 to 1545 and Advanced is 1546 and above. A student in the Basic range may be only a few skills away from Proficient.

How much does PSSA math tutoring cost?

Plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, with no contract. You can start with a free assessment, where the tutor checks your child's level against the Pennsylvania standards and suggests a plan.
