What changes after a term of lessons

Worked solution of a linear equation on the shared lesson whiteboard
Lessons happen on a shared whiteboard, so your child solves while the tutor watches and guides (example lesson).

Solid on the tested standards

Fills gaps in the grade-level skills TCAP checks, from fractions and place value to ratios, linear equations and functions.

Strong without a calculator

Keeps arithmetic quick and accurate, since grades 3 to 8 start with a calculator-free subpart and the EOC tests include one too.

Steady pacing

Practices in timed blocks that match the three subparts, about 110 to 115 minutes in grades 3 to 8, so focus lasts to the end.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Number and operations

Place value, multi-digit arithmetic and operations with decimals and rational numbers, matched to your child's grade in the Tennessee standards.

Fractions

Fraction equivalence, comparing fractions and operations with fractions, a major focus of the grades 3 to 5 standards.

Ratios and proportional reasoning

Ratios, rates, percents and proportional relationships, central to the grades 6 and 7 tests.

Expressions and equations

Writing and solving equations and inequalities, through linear equations and systems in grade 8.

Geometry and measurement

Area, volume, angles, the coordinate plane and transformations, matched to the grade-level standards.

Statistics and probability

Data displays, measures of center and simple probability, as taught in middle school.

High school end-of-course math

Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Integrated Math I to III skills for the EOC tests, including the calculator-free section.

Multiple-select questions

Questions with more than one correct answer and no partial credit, so we practice checking every option before moving on.

Signs your child could use help

  • Scored Below or Approaching Expectations on the last TCAP math test
  • Struggles with fractions, ratios or equations in class
  • Relies on a calculator for basic arithmetic
  • Is taking Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II or Integrated Math this year
  • Wants to protect a course grade that includes the TCAP score
  • Needs more help than the school's test review offers

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

TCAP Mathematics (Tennessee Department of Education)

Grades 3 to 8 and high school EOC math are tested from April 19 to May 6, 2027, with a fall EOC block from November 30 to December 17, 2026. Each math test has three subparts, one without a calculator. Results use four levels, from Below to Exceeded Expectations.

For families moving from the UK

TCAP in grades 3 to 8 covers roughly Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 maths. We check your child's gaps against the Tennessee standards rather than the UK curriculum, then practice the TCAP format.

Level: Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 maths

For families moving from Canada

Provincial math covers similar topics, but TCAP follows the Tennessee Academic Standards for Math and its own subpart format. We map what your child learned to those standards and practice the format.

Level: Grades 3-11 math

For families moving from Australia

NAPLAN numeracy tests Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. TCAP tests every grade from 3 to 8 plus high school courses, so we fill gaps against the Tennessee standards and practice the format.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How TCAP math lessons work

Start with a skills check

The first lesson finds which grade-level standards your child has secure and which need work, using test-style questions.

Teach, then practice the format

Each skill is taught step by step, then practiced in TCAP-style items, with and without a calculator.

Build toward test conditions

Short timed sets grow into full subpart-length practice as April gets closer.

Updates for parents

You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

Common worries, honest answers

“Do TCAP scores affect my child's grade?”

Yes. Tennessee law requires TCAP scores to count as a percentage of the grade in grades 3 to 8, and state board policy does the same for high school EOC courses. Districts may leave them out if results arrive too late.

“My child gets anxious about tests. Will this make it worse?”

We keep early practice calm and short, and build confidence by showing progress. Knowing the format well usually makes test day feel familiar instead of scary.

“My child is strong in math. Is tutoring still useful?”

Yes. Lessons can move ahead into next year's standards and harder problems while keeping the test format familiar, which helps students aiming for Exceeded Expectations.

Frequently asked questions

When is the TCAP math test in 2027?

The Tennessee Department of Education lists the spring 2027 window for grades 3 to 8 and end-of-course tests as April 19 to May 6, 2027. High school EOC tests also have a fall window from November 30 to December 17, 2026. Your district sets the exact days.

What is on the TCAP math test in grades 3 to 8?

Each test has three subparts, and the first is calculator-free. Grades 3 to 5 take about 110 minutes in total and grades 6 to 8 about 115 minutes. Questions are multiple choice or multiple select, and grades 6 to 8 also see technology-enhanced items.

Which high school math courses have a TCAP EOC test?

Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Integrated Math I, II and III each have an end-of-course test, given at the end of the course. Each uses three subparts with calculator and non-calculator sections.

What do the TCAP performance levels mean?

Results use four levels: Below, Approaching, Met and Exceeded Expectations. Met and Exceeded mean your child is meeting grade-level expectations in math. Below and Approaching mean some skills still need work.

What math test do Tennessee juniors take?

Tennessee students must take the ACT or SAT in grade 11, and it is now a graduation requirement for a regular or honors diploma. The spring 2027 ACT junior testing runs in three windows between March 9 and April 16, 2027.

How much does TCAP math tutoring cost?

Plans start at $85 a month for two 45-minute lessons a week, with no contract. You can start with a free assessment, where the tutor checks your child's level against the Tennessee standards and suggests a plan.
