How it works, in short
TaleemSquare Virginia SOL math tutoring is live, one-to-one online help for Virginia students preparing for the Standards of Learning math tests in grades 3 to 8 or the end-of-course tests in Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II. A tutor works on the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning your child finds hardest and practices the online test format.
New cut scores start in 2026-27. A temporary Approaching level still counts as passing, so the Algebra I passing score is 413 while Proficient starts at 453. Plans start at $85 a month, with no contract.

What changes after a term of lessons

Solid on the 2023 standards
Fills gaps in the grade-level skills the SOL tests check under the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning, from fractions to functions.
Ready for higher cut scores
Aims for Proficient, not just passing, since the temporary Approaching level narrows each year and ends after 2028-29.
Verified credit secured
Prepares high school students to pass the end-of-course test that turns a math course into a verified credit for the diploma.
What we cover
Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.
Number and operations
Place value, multi-digit arithmetic and operations with decimals, matched to your child's grade in the Virginia standards.
Fractions and decimals
Equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering, and operations with fractions and decimals, a major focus of grades 3 to 6.
Ratios, proportions and percents
Ratios, rates, percents and proportional reasoning, central in the middle school grades.
Expressions, equations and inequalities
Writing and solving equations and inequalities, through linear relationships and functions in grade 8.
Geometry and measurement
Area, volume, angles, the coordinate plane and transformations, matched to the grade-level standards.
Probability and statistics
Reading data displays, measures of center and simple probability, as taught in the elementary and middle grades.
Algebra I and Algebra II
Linear, quadratic and exponential functions, systems and data for the Algebra I and Algebra II end-of-course tests.
Geometry end-of-course test
Reasoning and proof, triangles, polygons, circles, coordinate geometry and three-dimensional figures for the Geometry SOL test.
Signs your child could use help
- Scored Fail/Basic or Approaching Pass on the last SOL math test
- Struggles with fractions, ratios or equations in class
- Is taking Algebra I, Geometry or Algebra II this year
- Still needs a math verified credit for the diploma
- Finds the computer-adaptive format in grades 3 to 8 stressful
- Needs more help than the school's test review offers
One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.
Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live
Virginia Standards of Learning Assessments (Virginia Department of Education)
Math SOL tests are given in grades 3 to 8 and as end-of-course tests in Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II. Online grades 3 to 8 tests are computer adaptive. New cut scores begin in 2026-27, with a temporary Approaching level that counts as passing through 2028-29.
For families moving from the UK
The grades 3 to 8 SOL tests cover roughly Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 maths, and the end-of-course tests reach Key Stage 4. We check gaps against the Virginia standards rather than the UK curriculum, then practice the format.
Level: Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 maths
For families moving from Canada
Provincial math covers similar topics, but the SOL tests follow Virginia's own 2023 standards and an online, partly adaptive format. We map what your child learned to those standards and practice the format.
Level: Grades 3-11 math
For families moving from Australia
NAPLAN numeracy tests Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Virginia tests every grade from 3 to 8 plus three high school courses, so we fill gaps against the Virginia standards and practice the format.

How Virginia SOL math lessons work
Start with a skills check
The first lesson finds which grade-level standards your child has secure and which need work, using test-style questions.
Teach, then practice the format
Each skill is taught step by step, then practiced in SOL-style online questions, including adaptive-style sets for grades 3 to 8.
Build toward test conditions
Short timed sets grow into full practice tests as the spring testing window gets closer.
Updates for parents
You get a short note after every lesson on what was covered and what to practice next.

“The cut scores changed. Will my child still pass?”
In 2026-27, a temporary Approaching level counts as passing on every reading and math SOL test. Its range narrows in 2027-28 and 2028-29 and is removed after that, so we aim for the Proficient score now rather than the minimum.
“My child gets anxious about tests. Will this make it worse?”
We keep early practice calm and short, and build confidence by showing progress. Knowing the format well usually makes test day feel familiar instead of scary.
“My child already passed an end-of-course test. Do they need to retake it?”
No. The Virginia Department of Education says students who already showed proficiency on a high school end-of-course test, or earned the verified credit, do not have to retake the test or the course under the new cut scores.
