How it works, in short

TaleemSquare math catch-up tutoring is live, one-to-one online help for children who have fallen behind in math. A free assessment finds the specific skills that are missing, often from earlier grades, and the tutor rebuilds them in order before linking them to the math your child's class is doing now.

Falling behind is common: in the 2024 Nation's Report Card, 24 percent of US fourth graders scored below NAEP Basic in math. Plans start at $85 a month, with no contract, and three lessons a week suits most catch-up plans.

Gaps found and filled

The missing skills behind today's struggles are identified and taught in order, not guessed at.

Back to grade level

Once foundations are secure, lessons move to current classwork so grades and test scores can recover.

Confidence returns

Steady, visible progress replaces the feeling of being lost in every math lesson.

What we cover

Lessons follow your child's own school or homeschool curriculum. These are the areas we work on most at this level.

Number sense and place value

Counting, comparing and place value, which many later topics depend on.

Math facts

Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts, practiced in short regular sessions until they are quick.

Fractions and decimals

A frequent gap from grades 3 to 6 that makes ratios, percents and algebra harder later.

Ratios and percents

Proportional reasoning from middle school, needed for pre-algebra and science.

Pre-algebra skills

Negative numbers, order of operations and simple equations before Algebra 1.

Current classwork

Your child's homework and upcoming tests, once the foundation underneath is in place.

Signs your child could use help

  • Grades in math have dropped this year
  • Teacher says your child is below grade level
  • Struggles with skills from earlier grades
  • Avoids math homework or melts down over it
  • Scored low on a state test or MAP report
  • Moved schools or missed time and never caught up

One of these on its own is normal. Two or three together usually point to a specific gap, and finding it is what the free assessment is for.

Taught to your curriculum, wherever you live

Common Core and state math standards

The tutor maps your child's gaps to your state's grade-level standards, fills earlier skills first, then follows current classwork so school grades can recover.

National Curriculum in England

For UK families, tutors follow your child's year group in the National Curriculum, from Key Stage 1 to GCSE, and use school work when it helps.

Level: Reception to Year 13

Provincial math curricula

For Canadian families, lessons follow your province's math curriculum and your child's grade, and can use school assignments as the starting point.

Level: Kindergarten to Grade 12

Australian Curriculum: Mathematics

For Australian families, tutors follow the Australian Curriculum for your child's year level, from Foundation to Year 12, including NAPLAN preparation.

What went well and what to practice before next time.

Who teaches your child

Every TaleemSquare math tutor passes the same five checks before their first class. Your child keeps the same tutor each week, and if the fit is not right we switch tutor at no cost. Tutors are based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan and India, and all of them teach in English.

How we screen and match tutors
  • Identity and references checked

Every tutor is identity-verified and reference-checked before teaching a student.

  • Subject test

Tutors pass a subject test before they are matched with a child.

  • Spoken-English assessment

Lessons are taught in English, so every tutor passes a spoken-English assessment.

  • Live sample lesson

Tutors teach a live sample lesson before they are hired, to show they can explain clearly.

  • Open to parents

Classes are one-to-one in a password-protected room. Sit in on any class or ask for a recording.

How a catch-up plan works

Assess first

The free assessment checks skills from earlier grades, not just this year's topics, to find where the gaps start.

Rebuild in order

Missing skills are taught from the bottom up with visual models and systematic steps, so new learning has something to stand on.

Link back to class

Each lesson connects the rebuilt skill to current homework, so your child sees progress at school.

Progress updates on WhatsApp

You get regular updates on what was covered, what improved and one thing to practice at home.

Common worries, honest answers

“My child is several grades behind. Is it too late?”

No. Starting where your child is secure and rebuilding in order is how lost ground is recovered. Progress speed varies, which is why we review the plan with you as you go.

“Will catch-up lessons ignore current homework?”

No. Most lessons mix one earlier skill with this week's classwork, so school grades are not left behind while foundations are rebuilt.

“How many lessons a week does catching up take?”

It depends on the gaps. Many families choose three lessons a week while catching up and drop to two once their child is back on track. There is no contract, so you can change.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if my child is behind in math?

Find out exactly which skills are missing first, since a child who struggles with today's topic is often missing something from an earlier grade. Then rebuild those skills in order with regular practice. Our free assessment does that check and suggests a plan.

How common is it for children to fall behind in math?

Quite common. In the 2024 Nation's Report Card, 24 percent of US fourth graders scored below NAEP Basic in math and 39 percent scored at or above NAEP Proficient, so many children need extra support at some point.

How does a tutor help a child catch up in math?

The Institute of Education Sciences recommends systematic instruction, clear math language, concrete and visual representations, number lines, word problem instruction and regular fluency practice for students who struggle. One-to-one lessons let a tutor do this at your child's pace.

How long does it take to catch up in math?

It depends on how many gaps there are and how often lessons happen. Some children close a single gap in a few weeks; others need a few months of steady lessons. We review progress with you so the plan stays realistic.

Can you help before a state test?

Yes. Once key gaps are filled, lessons can move to state test practice, such as STAAR, CAASPP, NJSLA or the New York State test, in the real question formats.

How much does math catch-up tutoring cost?

$85 a month for two 45-minute one-to-one lessons a week, $119 for three or $149 for four, with no contract or extra fees. The first assessment is free, and the first 4 paid classes are covered by our refund promise.
