MCAS math, Boston's graduation math rules and exam school admission

  • Boston students in grades 3 to 8 and grade 10 take the MCAS mathematics test each spring. DESE has posted its 2026-27 statewide testing schedule, updated August 31, 2026. For reference, in spring 2026 the grades 3 to 8 math window ran April 27 to May 22, and grade 10 math ran May 19 to 27.
  • Since voters approved the November 2024 ballot question, passing MCAS is no longer required to graduate. Under 603 CMR 30, students meet the math Competency Determination with one year each of Algebra I and Geometry, or Integrated Math I and II. Boston Public Schools requires a D- or better in those courses, plus MassCore's 4 math credits.
  • Boston Latin School, Boston Latin Academy and the John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science admit new students in grades 7 and 9, with a small number of grade 10 seats at O'Bryant. Applicants need a B or higher GPA and a valid MAP Growth score. The composite score is 30% MAP Growth and 70% GPA.

A one-to-one online tutor can close gaps in Algebra I and Geometry for the Competency Determination, review MCAS math topics, and strengthen the math skills a student needs before taking MAP Growth for exam school admission.

Do you follow the Massachusetts math curriculum?

Yes. Tutors align lessons with the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics and with your child's own school work. Share homework, worksheets or the topic list and the tutor will match it.

Can you help my child prepare for MCAS mathematics in grades 3 to 8 and grade 10?

What times are lessons available in Boston?

Lessons are scheduled in Eastern Time, usually after school on weekdays or at weekends. Your child keeps the same tutor and weekly slots, which you agree after the free assessment.

Do Boston students still have to pass MCAS math to graduate?

No. After the November 2024 ballot vote, the state changed the Competency Determination, so students meet the math part by completing Algebra I and Geometry, or Integrated Math I and II.
