Hillsborough's IAAT placement matrix and 15 math credits

  • At Hillsborough Middle School, sixth graders with 90 percent or higher after the second quarter take the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test in mid-winter or early spring. A placement matrix then weighs unit tests, quarterly assessments, the IAAT and teacher input. Algebra 1 in grade 7 is for a very small number of students.
  • Seventh graders in Math 7 or Math 7 Advanced are screened for Algebra 1 in grade 8. Eighth graders who finish Algebra 1 with 75 percent or better are screened for Geometry CP or Geometry Honors. The district makes no exceptions for these placements, but parents may request an end-of-year review.
  • Hillsborough High School requires 120 credits, including 15 in math: Algebra I, Geometry and a third year that builds on them. Juniors take New Jersey's NJGPA-A, which covers Algebra I and Geometry, from March 1 to 19, 2027. Grades 3 to 8 take NJSLA-A from April 19 to May 21, 2027.

A one-to-one online tutor can strengthen the skills Hillsborough weighs in its IAAT and unit test placement matrix, support Algebra 1 in grade 7 or 8, and prepare high schoolers for the NJGPA-A.
