Smarter Balanced, the grade 11 ACT and Hawaii's diploma math credits in Honolulu

  • Hawaii's public schools form one statewide district, so every Honolulu public school gives the Smarter Balanced math test in grades 3 to 8 and 11. The 2025-26 window ran February 17 to May 28, 2026. HIDOE had not posted 2026-27 dates as of October 2026.
  • HIDOE gives the ACT, which includes a math test, to all grade 11 students who have not taken it before. In 2026, schools chose from statewide dates of February 24, April 7 and April 21. Schools may also give the optional PreACT in grades 9 and 10.
  • A Hawaii high school diploma requires 3 math credits: Algebra 1, Geometry and one math elective. The Academic Honors and STEM Honors recognitions require 4 math credits, including Algebra 2 and one credit beyond it, such as Precalculus or Statistics, plus a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

A one-to-one online tutor can review grade-level Smarter Balanced skills, practice ACT math before the grade 11 test, and support Algebra 1, Geometry or Algebra 2 so a student stays on track for honors.
