HBCSD's Accelerated Pathway and HBUHSD math placement for 2026-27
- Huntington Beach City School District places all sixth graders in Mathematics 6. To join the Accelerated Pathway in grades 7 and 8, a student must earn all 6 points from three measures: the spring Smarter Balanced math score, the end-of-year STAR Math percentile and the end-of-year math grade.
- For 2026-27, Huntington Beach Union High School District enrolls Math 8 students in Algebra 1 or Algebraic Mindsets based on teacher recommendation and student preference, with no exam. Students already in Algebra 1 or Geometry take the Accelerated Geometry or Algebra II/Trig placement exam.
- Every HBUHSD ninth grader also takes a diagnostic exam with their math teacher within the first three weeks of school to confirm placement. California's Smarter Balanced math test is given in grades 3 to 8 and again in grade 11, so it reaches students in both districts.
A one-to-one online tutor can raise the skills measured by Smarter Balanced and STAR Math in grades 6 and 7, then prepare students for HBUHSD placement exams, Algebra 1 and Geometry.
